History
Bennington was founded in 1856 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Bennington, Vermont, the birthplace of one of the settlers. The town was incorporated in 1887.

Bennington is located at 41°14'25" North, 96°2'17" West (41.240278, -96.038194). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Bennington is home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a bank, a pharmacy, and several restaurants. The city also has a public library and a post office.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,719 people, 1,845 households, and 1,269 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,133.6 people per square mile (822.3/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 872.3 per square mile (337.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 2.2% from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.12.
