Smithfield, Nebraska is a small town located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the county of Gage. It is situated on the banks of the Big Blue River, and is surrounded by rolling hills and farmland. The town was founded in 1871, and has a population of just over 500 people.
History
Smithfield was founded in 1871 by a group of settlers from Ohio. The town was named after Smithfield Township in Ohio, where many of the settlers had come from. The town was originally a farming community, and the settlers quickly established a post office, a general store, and a school.
In the late 19th century, Smithfield began to grow and prosper. The town was connected to the railroad in 1887, and the population began to increase. The town also became a center for the local agricultural industry, with several grain elevators and a creamery being built.
