Mimbres Summary
Mimbres, New Mexico is a small unincorporated community located in Grant County in the southwestern part of the state. It is situated in the Mimbres Valley, which is part of the Gila River drainage basin. The town is located about 25 miles south of Silver City, the county seat, and about 50 miles north of Las Cruces. The population of Mimbres was estimated to be about 1,000 in 2020.
History
Mimbres was first settled in the late 1800s by settlers from Mexico and the American Southwest. The town was named after the Mimbres Indians, who lived in the area prior to the arrival of the settlers. The Mimbres were a nomadic tribe that lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of the settlers.
