The area that is now Afton was first settled in 1791 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as "Newtown," but was later changed to "Afton" in 1808. The name is derived from the poem "The Afton Water" by Robert Burns.

The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
