History
The area that is now Hillside was originally inhabited by the Matinecock Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s, and the hamlet was officially established in 1790. The hamlet was originally known as “Hillsides”, and was later changed to “Hillside”.
The hamlet was primarily a farming community until the late 19th century, when it began to develop into a residential area. The first post office was established in 1891, and the first school was built in 1895. The hamlet continued to grow throughout the 20th century, and by the 1950s, it had become a popular suburban community.
