Newfane Summary
Newfane is a town located in Niagara County, New York, United States. The population was 5,735 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Buffalo–Niagara Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Newfane was first settled in 1810 by a group of settlers from New England. The town was originally part of the Town of Hartland, but was separated in 1824 and incorporated as the Town of Newfane. The town was named after Newfane, Vermont, the hometown of many of the original settlers.
The town was an agricultural community for much of its history, with dairy farming being the primary industry. In the late 19th century, the town began to develop as a resort area, with several hotels and resorts being built along the shore of Lake Ontario.
Geography
Newfane is located in the northwest corner of Niagara County, bordered by Lake Ontario to the north, the Town of Wilson to the east, the Town of Somerset to the south, and the Town of Porter to the west. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 33.2 square miles, of which 32.9 square miles is land and 0.3 square miles (0.9%) is water.
Economy
Newfane’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several wineries, including Arrowhead Spring Vineyards, Schulze Vineyards, and Leonard Oakes Estate Winery. The town is also home to several fruit farms, including Apple Country Orchards and The Apple Farm.
Tourism is also an important part of the local economy. The town is home to several popular attractions, including the Niagara Wine Trail, the Niagara Scenic Parkway, and the Niagara Falls State Park.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 5,735 people, 2,093 households, and 1,541 families residing in the town. The population density was 174.2 people per square mile (67.2/km2). There were 2,521 housing units at an average density of 76.6 per square mile (29.6/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 2,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.71 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 6.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $51,964. Males had a median income of $37,917 versus $25,917 for females.
