Bethany Summary

Bethany is a city located in Oklahoma County, Oklahoma, United States. It is part of the Oklahoma City metropolitan area and is located just west of the city. The population was 19,051 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.2 percent from 17,451 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Bethany is located at 35°31'25" North, 97°37'17" West (35.523862, -97.621345). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), all land.

History

Bethany was founded in 1909 by the Church of the Nazarene. The town was named after the biblical town of Bethany, which was the home of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus. The town was incorporated in 1910 and has grown steadily since then.

The economy of Bethany is largely based on retail and services. The city is home to several large retail stores, including Walmart, Target, and Lowe's. There are also several restaurants, banks, and other businesses located in the city.

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,051 people, 7,845 households, and 4,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,312.3 people per square mile (894.2/km2). There were 8,845 housing units at an average density of 1,077.3 per square mile (416.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 2.2% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.3% of the population.
There were 7,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 13.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
