Guthrie, Oklahoma is a city located in Logan County, Oklahoma, United States. It is the county seat of Logan County and is located along the Cimarron River. The population of Guthrie was 10,191 at the 2010 census, an increase of 7.1 percent from the 2000 census.
History
Guthrie was founded in 1889 during the Land Run of 1889, when the Unassigned Lands were opened for settlement. It was named after jurist John Guthrie of Topeka, Kansas. The town quickly grew and became the territorial capital of Oklahoma in 1890. It was the first capital of the State of Oklahoma after it was admitted to the Union in 1907. Guthrie was the largest city in Oklahoma for several years after statehood.
Geography
Guthrie is located at 35°52'48" North, 97°25'2" West (35.8800, -97.4172). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), all land.
Economy
Guthrie is a regional center for business, government, and education. The city is home to several large employers, including the University of Central Oklahoma, the Oklahoma State Capitol, and the Oklahoma Department of Transportation. The city also has a vibrant downtown area with a variety of shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 10,191 people, 4,093 households, and 2,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,228.3 people per square mile (473.3/km2). There were 4,717 housing units at an average density of 571.2 per square mile (221.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.3% African American, 4.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.7% of the population.
There were 4,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 11.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 21.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
