Tishomingo is a city located in Johnston County, Oklahoma, United States. It is the county seat of Johnston County and is located in the southern part of the state. The population was 3,162 at the 2010 census, an increase of 8.1 percent from 2,932 at the 2000 census.

History

Tishomingo was founded in 1867 by the Chickasaw Nation, who named it after Chief Tishomingo. The town was originally located in the Chickasaw Nation, Indian Territory, and was the capital of the Chickasaw Nation from 1856 to 1907. The town was the site of the first Chickasaw Constitutional Convention in 1856.
The town was also the site of the first Chickasaw National Capitol building, which was built in 1856 and served as the seat of government for the Chickasaw Nation until 1907. The building was destroyed by fire in 1908.
The town was also the site of the first Chickasaw National Bank, which was established in 1892. The bank was the first bank in the Indian Territory and was the first bank in the state of Oklahoma.

Geography

Tishomingo is located at 34°37′17″N 96°37′17″W (34.6214, -96.6214). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all land.

Tishomingo is the home of Murray State College, a two-year college that offers associate degrees and certificates in a variety of fields. The college also offers a variety of continuing education courses.
The city is also home to a number of businesses, including a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services. The city is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a number of automotive parts suppliers.

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,932 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the city. The population density was 917.2 people per square mile (354.2/km2). The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.09.
