Hopkinton Summary
Hopkinton, Rhode Island is a small town located in Washington County, Rhode Island. It is bordered by the towns of Westerly, Charlestown, Richmond, and South Kingstown. The town has a population of approximately 5,000 people and covers an area of approximately 24 square miles.
History
The area that is now Hopkinton was originally inhabited by the Narragansett Native American tribe. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1600s and the town was officially incorporated in 1757. The town was named after Stephen Hopkins, a signer of the Declaration of Independence.
In the late 1700s and early 1800s, Hopkinton was a major center for the production of textiles. The town was home to several mills, including the Hopkinton Manufacturing Company, which was founded in 1810. The town also had a thriving shipbuilding industry, with several shipyards located along the Pawcatuck River.
