Manning Summary
Manning is a city located in Clarendon County, South Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Clarendon County. The population was 4,108 at the 2010 census.
History
Manning was founded in 1855 and named after John Laurence Manning, the Governor of South Carolina from 1852 to 1854. The town was incorporated in 1872.
During the Civil War, Manning was the site of a skirmish between Union and Confederate forces on April 17, 1865. The skirmish was part of the Union's campaign to capture Charleston.
Geography
Manning is located at 33°41'25" North, 80°14'45" West (33.690278, -80.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Manning is home to several businesses, including a variety of retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including a paper mill and a furniture factory.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,108 people, 1,619 households, and 1,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 976.2 people per square mile (377.3/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 441.7 per square mile (170.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 40.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
