Howard Summary
Howard is a village located in Brown County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 11,963 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Green Bay Metropolitan Statistical Area.
History
The area that is now Howard was first settled in 1835 by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The village was originally known as "L'Eau Pleine" (meaning "full water"), but was later renamed Howard in 1848 after the first postmaster, William Howard. The village was officially incorporated in 1883.
Geography
Howard is located at 44°30'25" North, 88°2'25" West (44.506944, -88.040278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) of it (1.22%) is water.
Economy
The economy of Howard is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The village is home to several large employers, including Georgia-Pacific, Schneider National, and Shopko. Other major employers include the Howard-Suamico School District, the Howard-Suamico Public Library, and the Howard-Suamico Parks and Recreation Department.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 11,845 people, 4,717 households, and 3,092 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,461.2 people per square mile (564.3/km2). There were 4,890 housing units at an average density of 602.2 per square mile (232.6/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.49 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the village was $21,945. About 3.7% of families and 5.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.2% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
