Kaukauna Summary
Kaukauna is a city located in Outagamie County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 15,462 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Appleton, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. Kaukauna is located on the Fox River, a few miles upstream from Lake Winnebago.
History
Kaukauna was first settled in 1848 by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The name Kaukauna is derived from the Menominee language, meaning "portage" or "place where canoes are carried". The city was incorporated in 1885.
In the late 19th century, Kaukauna was a major lumbering center. The city was home to several large sawmills and paper mills, which provided employment for many of the city's residents. The city also had a large brickyard, which produced bricks for many of the city's buildings.
Geography
Kaukauna is located at 44°19'45" North, 88°25'45" West (44.329167, -88.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which, 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Kaukauna's economy is largely based on manufacturing. The city is home to several large paper mills, including the Kimberly-Clark Corporation, which produces paper products such as Kleenex and Scott paper towels. The city is also home to several other manufacturing companies, including the Fox Valley Metal-Tech, which produces metal products, and the Fox Valley Tool & Die, which produces tools and dies.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 15,462 people, 6,541 households, and 4,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,912.3 people per square mile (737.2/km2). There were 6,945 housing units at an average density of 856.2 per square mile (331.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.7% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.7% of the population.
There were 6,541 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,845, and the median income for a family was $55,945. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,845. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
