Brandywine Summary
Brandywine, West Virginia is a small unincorporated community located in the eastern panhandle of the state. It is situated in the northern part of Berkeley County, near the Potomac River. The community is located approximately 10 miles south of Martinsburg, the county seat.
History
The area that is now Brandywine was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The community was originally known as “Brandywine Springs” and was named after the nearby Brandywine Creek. The creek was named after the Brandywine River in Pennsylvania, which was named after the Battle of Brandywine that took place during the American Revolution.
The first post office in the area was established in 1845 and the community was officially incorporated in 1851. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a grist mill, and a sawmill.
In the late 1800s, the town was home to a number of churches, including the Methodist Episcopal Church, the Lutheran Church, and the Presbyterian Church. The town also had a school, a hotel, and a number of other businesses.
