St Albans Summary
St Albans is a city located in Kanawha County, West Virginia, United States. It is part of the Charleston, West Virginia Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 11,044 at the 2010 census.
History
St Albans was founded in 1816 by William Haymond, a Revolutionary War veteran. The city was named after St Albans, England, and was incorporated in 1887.
The city was a major coal mining center in the early 20th century, and was home to the St. Albans Coal and Coke Company. The company was founded in 1891 and operated until the 1950s. The city was also home to the St. Albans Sanitarium, which was established in 1892 and operated until the 1970s.
Geography
St Albans is located at 38°21'25"N 81°37'45"W (38.356944, -81.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all of it land.

St Albans is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including the St. Albans Manufacturing Company, which produces industrial and commercial products.

As of the census of 2010, there were 11,044 people, 4,541 households, and 2,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,118.3 people per square mile (817.7/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 945.3 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
