Strategic Plan


The Department of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation

OUR WHY: To provide students with a transformative life and educational experience through the programs and the relationships offered through the Department of Athletics, Wellness and Recreation.

STRATEGIC GOALS

1. Encourage students to test and to extend their physical, mental, emotional, intellectual and social capabilities that is measured by academic achievement, graduation, campus and community service and citizenship and post-graduation success.
a. Have staff collaborate on programming and partnerships with Offices like the Career Resource Center, the Center for Academic Success, Student Affairs offices and the Honors Center.
b. Encourage all students connected to our department to develop and to establish a Co-curricular transcript.
c. Staff (coaches and program heads) will develop assessment tools to measure learning objectives in the area of student development.


2. Prepare and challenge our student-athletes to play for and to win Conference and National Championships and to achieve such success annually in all of our sports.
a. Have meetings on a regular basis to discuss best practices among peers.
b. Prioritize staffing decisions specifically designed to allow for additional support to student-athletes.
c. Develop programmatic specific success plans in all programs designed to analyze metrics, priorities and achieve department goals with the inclusion of department and appropriate College offices and departments.

3. Develop a communications strategy that promotes an inclusive and a diverse community of students and staff predicated on respect and tolerance towards equity for all.
a. Develop interdepartmental policies which clearly define lines of communication and expectations.
b. Allow for open dialogue/ opportunities for students to talk to administrators.
c. Encourage communication among staff that focus on best practices and the use of inclusive language.

4. Invest in the facilities and the infrastructure necessary to compete and to provide programming at the highest level.
a. Improve branding of department facilities (e.g. covered benches, branding on sheds, fences, in Elting Gym etc.)
b. Offer more diverse programming for students to connect with Wellness and Recreation.
c. Develop and catalogue a deferred maintenance program for all facilities.

5. Engage in strategic partnerships with our campus, our local community, the region, alumni and family to generate the necessary resources to accomplish our strategic goals. 
a. Connect with local youth clubs and organizations to promote opportunities for collaboration and involvement in offerings by the department (e.g. camps, clinics)
b. Work strategically with external partners (e.g. alumni, parents, corporations) to ensure the best possible revenue outcomes.
c. Conduct a market analysis for opportunities to increase in event/rental revenue

6. Engage in strategic partnerships with the students, staff and faculty of our campus. 
a. Enhance the diversity and inclusivity of our department through recruitment and retention of an increasingly diverse population of coaches, staff and students
b. Implement athletic, wellness and recreational programming that provide rich diversity-related experiences for all
c. Partner with an outside organization to provide professional development opportunities for coaches, staff and students to develop a diversity and inclusion plan for the department.
