War is futile. War pits friends against each other for foolish reasons. War may begin for good reasons, but it will leave only evil in the end.... Yup, it's Gundam -- everyone's favorite anti-war space opera!
Gundam SEED Special Edition is a 3-part super compressed title that smashes down 50 episodes of TV shows (1000 minutes?) into about 270 minutes. I've never seen the TV show, so I feel like I can judge Special Edition on its own merits.
Special Edition is too compressed. Everything about it seems to progress far too quickly, from the action scenes, to the characters, to the plot. If you haven't seen the TV show and were hoping to skip it and sum it up quickly with Special Ed
ition, I recommend against that. Ignore Special Edition and watch the TV show. All 50 episodes. I'm sure it will be a much more satisfying experience.
Now, with that out of the way..
Gundam SEED is about a war between the two divisions of the human race: Coordinators and Naturals. Coordinators are genetically enhanced humans, and naturals are just standard issue humans. The show implies that some Coordinators feel superior in every way to Naturals, and thus look down upon Naturals. Meanwhile, other Coordinators may not feel this way, but regardless, some Naturals are jealous of Coordinator abilities. So the two groups have quite a bit of friction with each other, which eventually leads to war.
The moral of the story seems to be thus: some people may be better than others in strength or intelligence, but that doesn't mean they are superior in ways that really matter.. such as what their emotions are like, or how they value someone else's love, how they behave morally or ethically. Gundam SEED seems to be stating that the most important thing about a human is not how good they are at killing or making money or what not, but that they care about other humans.. their friends, loved ones, and even their enemies. Rich or poor, strong or weak, this is irrelevant. What matters, Gundam SEED seems to say, is that you care about others, and do not wish to hurt others for your own selfish reasons.
If this sounds "too preachy" to you, then you should probably avoid this show, as the massive space battles and cool mecha designs are just there to lure you into the story's message.
The animation for Gundam SEED is pretty nice, but my first Gundam was Gundam 0083 Stardust Memory, which I felt had much better animation and art to it.
There's a huge cast of characters in the show, but 90% of them are not fleshed out in any meaningful way. (Perhaps they were fleshed out in the show?) In SE, they're paper thin, and the things that occur to them in SE is far less important to you when you don't know anything about them besides what kind of robot they control..
