Just finished reading and HIGHLY recommend the novel, _The Summer of the Ubume_, by Kyougoku Natsuhiko. Almost had a heart attack upon learning that Kyougoku had created not only this anime but my treasured, _Kousetsu Hyaku Monogatari_.
Despite having been helplessly drawn into this series and compelled to watch it all, I still could not tell you what it's about. However, it feels coherent and is unpretentious. This is one of those which I will probably have to watch 3-5 times to 'get'.
Highly recommended for those compelled to investigate the origins of human darkness and self-delusion. Aside from the Spanish painter, Francisco Goya, I have found no better guide through such realms than Kyougoku Natsuhiko. No better exorcist.

I think both are very similar. Somehow everything is strung up on one main case and many flashbacks to further characterize the characters. Also it has the similar summer feeling color palette. Both are interspersed with kinda philosophical topics. Also the dead girls in both Anime are kinda similarly devious.

Both are very heavy in dialogue, mostly about philosophical debates that, while they have little to nothing to do with the story, can delve in depth with Japanese mythology and wordplay. Really, both have a lot of wordplay and playing with Japanese Kanji.
They are also supernatural mysteries as well about creatures that haunt people, although Mouryou no Hako only focuses in Mouryou, Monogatari series focuses on several creatures.

the story opens more widely if you are familiar with japanese mythology. Show has it's philosophical moments of understanding a human capable for commiting a murder, but also very disturbing events that might confuse the viewer. I recommend especially if you're looking for some different aproach of story-telling and mixed detective/psychological thriller themes.

This show reminded me alot of the Visual Novel 'Kara no Shoujo', which is a great thing. It's dark, gives off this rural feeling, it's kind of disturbing and completely absorbs you into the world and story until the very end of this thrilling mystery.
I felt that you had to put a bit "too" much thought into the story at times though, there's alot of info-dumping in the show.
I'd totally recommend it for those who enjoy a bit twisted and dark shows.

It's really interesting, I was absorbed in the story since the first episode.
But at the same time it's quite hard to understand without having some knowledge about japanese culture. And you have to think about the story a lot.

Another great title that stays under the radar. Deep, fast paced and rich dialogue-heavy storytelling. Beautiful art and a good plot. Only downside is that if you're not familiar with japanese mythology and culture, you will have to waste some time researching or be left clueless at several points of the show. (some fansubs can cover this part tho, if you dont mind pausing.)
