* Three separate stories by Matsumoto Leiji about the tragedy of war.

Slipstream — a Luftwaffe pilot must choose between his duty to his country and his duty to the world: he has to either guard a bomber loaded with Germany's final hope of victory, the world's first atomic bomb, or let it fall in flames to enemy Spitfires and be a footnote in history. Things get personal, however, by the fact that the plane's other cargo is none other than the woman he loves.

Sonic Boom Squadron — the pilot of an Ohka bomb, the purest kamikaze desperation weapon of the Pacific War, once dreamt of flying a rocket into space, but instead he is to fly a rocket into an American ship for the glory of his homeland. If they would only have let him live another 30 years...

Knight of the Iron Dragon — on the Philippine island of Leyte, a rusted old motorcycle tells the tale of two Japanese soldiers who returned to a captured airfield to fulfil a promise that neither could ever keep.

This one was one of the first animes that I watched, because I like World War II as a fascinating history subject and I also like aviation. Three tales of Axis aviators during WWII. This small series of OVAs may appear revisionist at-a-glance, because, being Japanese, it depicts IJN and Luftwaffe pilots, and IJA soldiers, as tragic heroes from a romantic era, but it also depicts their more intimate feelings and thoughts as soldiers fighting a losing war. Its animation is very nice, very representative from the 1990's. The artstyle, the way the planes were drawn and animated, was also beautiful and very accurate, especially for the Luftwaffe Focke-Wulf Ta-152.

Overall, a nice little series about what probably is the most documented episode of human history. If you want to learn about the tribulations of the Axis soldiers during the last days of the war in a non-fiction, no-compromise historical setting with fictitious characters, this is highly recommended.

3 very well done war stories from WWII.

While the character design did not age well, the mechanical designs, sounds and music are all excelent. The stories are realistic and you get a good sense of the characters considering the time you spent with them.

It takes its subject seriously and doesn't get lost in pointless philosophy. I am particularly impressed with the pacing. It's easy to mess it up in such a short time, but here it is handled very well and no second feels wasted.

Definetly worth a look.

Great side stories from the WW2 created by Matsumoto. Not spoiled in trying to make sense from this war, but well-done to give insight of ordinary soldier from every camps taken in this craziness. Top notch animation brings life to these short dramas as no CG could ever dream to achieve. A must see and one of the most interesting piece from Matsumoto.

Serious business.

... I almost convinced myself not to start this review with a one word summation of what it's about, because this business is so serious, it should be handled as such. But it kinda flops after a while, reducing the need for appropriate reverence.

The animation is of The Old School; back when a series could be apparently popped out on 3 yen a day. But it has some very good examples of that style done right, mostly in the first iteration. Character designs are comically undercooked in the later two, but there are some very clever bits of mechanical design, and the important characters get some seriously good coats of paint.


Sound is a genuine failing. BGM isn' there, except op and ED, which I suppose is not a bad thing; but I daresay there was one or two parts that could have benefited from music on par with the final ending theme. Voice actors get a bit blurry at times, in that they are apparently generic individuals who have typcast as cheerful bumbler, tormented hero and so on.

The three stories are indeed very good. Indeed, the fact they are ill served by the medium used to communicate a very well composed version of the "war is bad" dance line is the only faulting. Genuinely meaningful aspects of the situation are explored, simply because background detail is not all that necessary.But a linked story this is not. Its individual stories, told by individual characters done by individual producers, but then there would be no point in retelling the entire WWII in the space of an hour and a half.

Character development suffers as a consequence viz; there isnt any. But the actual characters tend to have a good bit of identity to keep you interested while the story overruns there individual quirks, to tell an altruistic whole.

This is good stuff, but I doubt i'll be rewatching it. nearly everything about it is worthwhile, but there is nothing to be gained by another exposure to it.

So by all means get this, simply to hear a good new angle on an old story, but don't expect to be epicly influenced by it.
