My wife and I have 3 adult children and 5 grandchildren that are 5 years old and younger. My family is my joy, my support and my motivation. I have been a Leawood resident for 34 years. We love living here and I care deeply about our community so in addition to being state representative, I have served as president of my HOA for 5 years and volunteer with civic and charitable groups. I graduated from Raytown High School and earned a degree in Accounting at the University of Central Missouri. I then started my career and took night classes to earn my MBA in Finance at Rockhurst College. Then later in my career, I got my certification as a Project Management professional (PMP). My background of building teams and solving problems fits well with the role of State Representative. I enjoy helping people and have worked with hundreds in the district as they visit the capitol to sit and discuss ideas or need help navigating state agencies to get results.

  • Defend and improve our quality of life here in the district. By that I mean thriving businesses, safe streets and strong neighborhoods. People enjoy the great quality of life we have here and they don’t want what they see happening in Kansas City, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, Chicago and other progressive cities/states coming here.
  • Promote Quality Education – give every Kansas kid the best opportunity to get the best education possible. Toward that, last session we passed a bill called Blueprint for Literacy to address the fact that 40% of Kansas kids can’t read at grade level. Our kids are our future and we cannot fail them.
  • Lower the cost of living through lower taxes, affordable and reliable energy and affordable health care.

Taxation, education, health care, public safety, energy

Integrity, honesty, open and fair-minded critical thinking, building productive relationships, effective communications

Constituent services, communication, developing legislation and having the ability to get it passed through committee and both chambers, reading bills and testimony to be prepared for committee meetings and floor debate

Mowing lawns and then working in a gas station through high school

The Ogallala aquifer (ground water) in western and central Kansas needs attention, ensuring a reliable and affordable supply of energy, controlling the growth and cost of government.

All legislators bring work and personal experience and points of view to the process. All are beneficial.

Yes, not only beneficial but required to be an effective and successful legislator

Kansas Chamber of Commerce, Kansas Farm Bureau, KC BizPAC (Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce), NFIB (National Federation of Independent Businesses - the small business community)

Energy Utilities and Telecommunications (where I serve as Vice Chair), Tax, Health, Legislative Modernization (where we look at improving internal processes)

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Kansas

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
