Four seats on the Rutherford County Schools Board of Education were up for general election on August 7, 2014. The Zones 1, 4, and 7 seats were on the ballot for four-year terms, and the Zone 3 seat was on the ballot for a two-year term.

In the Zone 3 race, Lisa W. Moore defeated challengers Veronica Buchanan and Howard Jones. Zone 4 incumbent Wayne Blair defeated challenger Eric Tuttobene. In the Zone 7 race, which featured five candidates, retired educator Jim Estes won the seat. Zone 1 incumbent Aaron Holladay ran unopposed.

Rutherford County Schools is located in Rutherford County, Tennessee. The county seat of Rutherford County is Murfreesboro. Rutherford County is home to 262,604 residents, according to the United States Census Bureau.[1] Rutherford County Schools was the fifth-largest school district in Tennessee, serving 39,608 students during the 2011-2012 school year.[2]

Demographics

Rutherford County overperformed in comparison to the rest of Tennessee in terms of higher education achievement in 2012. The United States Census Bureau found that 27.9 percent of Rutherford County residents aged 25 years and older had attained a bachelor's degree compared to 23.5 percent for Tennessee as a whole. The median household income in Rutherford County was $55,105 compared to $44,140 for the state of Tennessee. The poverty rate in Rutherford County was 13.0 percent compared to 17.3 percent for the entire state.[1]

Voter and candidate information

The Rutherford County Board of Education consists of seven members elected at-large to four-year terms. While members are elected to specific "zones", they serve the entire district. There was no primary election and the general election was held on August 7, 2014. Three seats were up for election in 2014.[4]

The filing deadline for school board candidates to get on the ballot in the general election was April 3, 2014, and the deadline to withdraw was April 10, 2014.[5]
