In Rutherford County Schools, the appointed leader of the school district has the title of director of schools instead of superintendent. James Sullivan is the director of schools of Rutherford County Schools. Sullivan was appointed director of schools on July 1, 2022. Sullivan's previous career experience includes working in the district as an assistant superintendent and principal.[1]

Past superintendents

  • Bill C. Spurlock was the director of schools of Rutherford County Schools from July 1, 2018 until June 30, 2022. Spurlock's previous career experience includes working as an assistant principal, principal, and science teacher.[2]
  • Don Odom was the director of schools of Rutherford County Schools from 2012 to 2018.[3] Odom's previous career experience included working as the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, a math teacher, and a department chair.[4]

Members of the Rutherford County Schools school board are elected to four-year terms. Three or four seats are up for election on a staggered basis every even-numbered year in August.

Four seats on the board were up for general election on August 1, 2024. A primary was scheduled for March 5, 2024.
