3 I ate no pleasant bread, neither came flesh nor wine in my mouth, neither did I anoint myself at all, till three whole weeks were fulfilled.
3 I (F)did not eat any (e)tasty food, nor did meat or wine enter my mouth, nor did I use any ointment at all until the entire three weeks were completed.
3 I didn’t eat any rich food,(E) no meat or wine entered my mouth, and I didn’t put any oil on my body until the three weeks were over.
3 I ate no fancy foods neither meat nor wine entered my mouth. Furthermore, I didn't use any ointment until the end of the entire three weeks.
4 And in the four and twentieth day of the first month, as I was by the side of the great river, which is Hiddekel;
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, while I was by the bank of the great (G)river, that is, the (f)Tigris,
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month,(a) as I was standing on the bank of the great river,(F) the Tigris,
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, while I was beside the bank of the great Tigris River,
4 On the twenty-fourth day of the first month, as I was on the bank of the great river Hiddekel [which is the Tigris],
5 Then I lifted up mine eyes, and looked, and behold a certain man clothed in linen, whose loins were girded with fine gold of Uphaz:
5 I lifted my eyes and looked, and behold, there was a certain man (H)dressed in linen, whose waist was (I)girded with a belt of pure (J)gold of Uphaz.
5 I looked up, and there was a man dressed in linen,(G) with a belt of gold(H) from Uphaz(b)(I) around his waist.
5 I lifted up my eyes to look, and to my surprise, there was a certain man dressed in linen, whose waist was encircled with gold from Uphaz!
6 His body also was like the beryl, and his face as the appearance of lightning, and his eyes as lamps of fire, and his arms and his feet like in colour to polished brass, and the voice of his words like the voice of a multitude.
6 His body also was like (g)beryl, his face (h)had the appearance of lightning, (K)his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a (i)tumult.
6 His body was like topaz,(c) his face like the brilliance of lightning, his eyes like flaming torches,(J) his arms and feet like the gleam of polished bronze, and the sound of his words like the sound of a multitude.(K)
6 His body was like beryl, his face flashed like lightning, his eyes were like flaming torches, his arms and legs were like polished bronze, and his speech roared like that of a crowd.
7 And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves.
7 Now I, Daniel, (L)alone saw the vision, while the (M)men who were with me did not see the vision; nevertheless, a great (N)dread fell on them, and they ran away to hide themselves.
7 Only I, Daniel, saw the vision.(L) The men who were with me did not see it,(M) but a great terror fell on them,(N) and they ran and hid.
7 "Now I, Daniel, was the only one to receive the vision the men who were with me didn't see it. However, an enormous fear overwhelmed them, so they ran away to hide,
7 And I, Daniel, alone saw the vision [of this heavenly being], for the men who were with me did not see the vision; nevertheless, a great panic overwhelmed them, so they ran away to hide themselves.
8 Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength.
8 So I was (O)left alone and saw this great vision; yet (P)no strength was left in me, for my (j)natural color turned to (k)a deathly pallor, and I retained no strength.
8 I was left alone, looking at this great vision.(O) No strength was left in me; my face grew deathly pale,(d)(P) and I was powerless.
8 and I was left alone to observe this magnificent vision. Nevertheless, no strength remained in me my face lost its color, and I became weak.
8 So I was left alone and saw this great vision; yet no strength was left in me, for my normal appearance turned to a deathly pale, and I grew weak and faint [with fright].
9 Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground.
9 But I heard the sound of his words; and as soon as I heard the sound of his words, I (Q)fell into a deep sleep on my face, with my face to the ground.
9 I heard the words he said, and when I heard them I fell into a deep sleep,(e)(Q) with my face to the ground.
9 As I listened to the sound of his words, I fell down on my face unconscious, with my face to the ground."
9 Then I heard the sound of his words; and when I heard the sound of his words, I fell on my face in a deep sleep, with my face toward the ground.
Angelic Conflict
11 And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling.
11 He said to me, “O (S)Daniel, man of (m)high esteem, (T)understand the words that I am about to tell you and (U)stand (n)upright, for I have now been sent to you.” And when he had spoken this word to me, I stood up (V)trembling.
11 He said to me, “Daniel, you are a man treasured by God.(R) Understand the words that I’m saying to you. Stand on your feet,(S) for I have now been sent to you.”(T) After he said this to me, I stood trembling.
11 He told me, "Daniel, man highly regarded, understand the message that I'm about to relate to you. Stand up, because I've been sent to you.' When he spoke this statement to me, I stood there trembling.
11 So he said to me, “O Daniel, you highly regarded and greatly beloved man, understand the words that I am about to say to you and stand upright, for I have now been sent to you.” And while he was saying this word to me, I stood up trembling.
12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words.
12 Then he said to me, “(W)Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on (X)humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response (Y)to your words.
12 “Don’t be afraid,(U) Daniel,” he said to me, “for from the first day that you purposed to understand and to humble yourself before your God,(V) your prayers were heard. I have come because of your prayers.(W)
12 In year one of King Darius the Mede, I arose to fortify and strengthen him.'"
12 Then he said to me, “Do not be afraid, Daniel, for from the first day that you set your heart on understanding this and on humbling yourself before your God, your words were heard, and I have come in response to your words.
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia.
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia was (o)withstanding me for twenty-one days; then behold, (Z)Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me, for I had been left there with the kings of Persia.
13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for 21 days. Then Michael,(X) one of the chief princes, came to help me after I had been left there with the kings of Persia.(Y)
13 ""Don't be afraid, Daniel,' he told me, "because from the first day that you committed yourself to understand and to humble yourself before your God, your words were heard. I've come in answer to your prayers.
14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days.
14 Now I have come to (AA)give you an understanding of what will happen to your people in the (p)(AB)latter days, for the vision pertains to (AC)the days yet future.”
14 Now I have come to help you understand what will happen to your people in the last days,(Z) for the vision refers to those days.”(AA)
14 However, the prince of the kingdom of Persia opposed me for 21 days. Then all of a sudden, Michael, one of the chief angels, came to assist me! I had been detained there near the kings of Persia.
14 Now I have come to make you understand what will happen to your people in the latter days, for the vision is in regard to the days yet to come.”
15 And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb.
15 When he had spoken to me according to these words, I (q)turned my face toward the ground and became (AD)speechless.
15 While he was saying these words to me, I turned my face toward the ground and was speechless.(AB)
15 Now I've come to help you understand what will happen to your people in the days to come, because the vision pertains to those days.'
15 When he had spoken to me according to these words, I turned my face toward the ground and was speechless.
16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength.
16 And behold, (r)(AE)one who resembled a human being was (AF)touching my lips; then I opened my mouth and spoke and said to him who was standing before me, “O my lord, as a result of the vision (s)(AG)anguish has come upon me, and I have retained no strength.
16 Suddenly one with human likeness(AC) touched my lips.(AD) I opened my mouth and said to the one standing in front of me, “My lord, because of the vision, anguish overwhelms me and I am powerless.(AE)
16 "After he had spoken to me like this, I bowed my face to the ground, unable to speak.
16 And behold, one who resembled the sons of men touched my lips. Then I opened my mouth and spoke and said to him who was standing before me, “O my lord, because of the vision anguish has come upon me, and I have retained no strength.
17 For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me.
17 For (AH)how can such a servant of my lord talk with such as my lord? As for me, there remains just now (AI)no strength in me, nor has any breath been left in me.”
17 How can someone like me,(AF) your servant,(f) speak with someone like you, my lord? Now I have no strength, and there is no breath in me.”
17 But suddenly someone who resembled a human being touched my lips, so addressing the one who was standing in front of me, I opened my mouth and said, "Sir, I'm overwhelmed with anguish by this vision. I have no strength left.
17 For how can such a [weakened] servant of my lord talk with such [a being] as my lord? For now there remains no strength in me, nor has any breath been left in me.”
18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,
18 So how can a servant of my lord talk with someone like you, sir? And as for me, there's no strength left in me, and I can hardly breathe.'
18 Then the one (Gabriel) whose appearance was like that of a man touched me again, and he strengthened me.
19 And said, O man greatly beloved, fear not: peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. And when he had spoken unto me, I was strengthened, and said, Let my lord speak; for thou hast strengthened me.
19 He said, “O man of (t)high esteem, (AK)do not be afraid. Peace (u)be with you; take (AL)courage and be courageous!” Now as soon as he spoke to me, I received strength and said, “May my lord speak, for you have (AM)strengthened me.”
19 He said, “Don’t be afraid,(AH) you who are(g) treasured by God.(AI) Peace to you; be very strong!”(AJ)As he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”(AK)
19 "Then this person who looked like a man touched me again and strengthened me
19 He said, “O man, highly regarded and greatly beloved, do not be afraid. Peace be to you; take courage and be strong.” Now when he had spoken to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”
20 Then said he, Knowest thou wherefore I come unto thee? and now will I return to fight with the prince of Persia: and when I am gone forth, lo, the prince of Grecia shall come.
20 Then he said, “Do you (v)understand why I came to you? But I shall now return to fight against the (w)prince of Persia; so I am going forth, and behold, the (x)(AN)prince of (y)Greece is about to come.
20 He said, “Do you know why I’ve come to you? I must return at once to fight against the prince of Persia, and when I leave, the prince of Greece will come.(AL)
20 and said, "Don't be afraid, man highly regarded. Be at peace, and be strong.' "As soon as he spoke to me, I gained strength and replied, "Sir, please speak, now that you've strengthened me.'
21 But I will shew thee that which is noted in the scripture of truth: and there is none that holdeth with me in these things, but Michael your prince.
21 However, I will tell you what is inscribed in the writing of (AO)truth. Yet there is no one who (z)stands firmly with me against these forces except (AP)Michael your prince.
21 No one has the courage to support me against them except Michael,(AM) your prince. However, I will tell you what is recorded in the book of truth. >
21 "Then he said, "Do you understand why I came to you? Soon I'll return to fight the prince of Persia. I'm going forth to war and take note the prince of Greece is coming!
