for this could have been sold for a great price, which might have been given to the poor.

now being at Bethany, in the house of Simon the leper, while he was at table, there came a woman with a viol full of the perfume of spikenard, which was very costly; and she opened the viol, and poured it upon his head. but some had a secret indignation, and said, why must the perfume be so wasted? for we could have sold it for above two hundred denarys, and given them to the poor: and they inveighed against her.

but Mary taking a pound of the oil of spikenard which was very costly, anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped them with her hair: so that the house was filled with the odour of the perfume. whereupon one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, who was to betray him, said, why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, to be given to the poor?read more.
this he said, not out of any concern for the poor; but because being purse-bearer he used to pilfer what was in bank.

Then the high priest, and all that accompanied him, who were of the sect of the Sadducees, being filled with indignation,

When they heard these things, they were transported with rage, and gnashed their teeth against him.

for Herodias made her appearance there, and danc'd with such an engaging air in the eye of Herod, as well as of all the company, that the king thus addrest himself to the young lady, "ask of me whatever you please, and it shall be granted." nay, he ratified his promise with an oath, "I will give you whatever you require, said he, tho' it be even the half of my kingdom." then she withdrew, and said to her mother, what shall I ask? the head of John the Baptist, said she.

for from within, from the heart of man proceed wicked designs, adulteries, fornications, murders; thefts, avarice, malice, fraud, impudence, envy, scandal, pride, vanity. all these vices come from within, and are what defile the man.

out of the heart proceed evil designs, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false testimony, slanders. these are the things which defile a man: but to eat without washing one's hands, that does not defile a man.

Render no man evil for evil. mind such things as are approved not only by God, but by men. do all you can to live peaceably, if it be possible, with all mankind. dear brethren, avenge not yourselves, but leave that to the resentment of another: for it is written, "vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord."read more.
therefore if thine enemy hunger, feed him; if he thirst, give him drink: for in so doing, you will heap coals of fire on his head . be not overcome by evil, but overcome evil by good.

Don't allow any one to return evil for evil, but strive to do all the good you can to one another, and to all the world.

but if you bite and tear one another, take heed that you be not consumed by one another.

for it is God that influences your desires and endeavours, out of his benevolence to you. do every thing without murmuring and disputes: that you may be without reproach, the inoffensive spotless children of God in the midst of a depraved and perverse generation (among whom you should shine as stars in the world,

but now renounce them all, as well as anger, animosity, malice: let calumny and obscene discourse be banish'd from your lips.

a christian must not be litigious, but easy to all men, qualify'd to instruct,

but if envy and contention imbitter your minds, don't think your false pretences can stand against the truth: such wisdom is not derived from heaven; but is terrestrial, sensual, demoniacal. where false zeal, and a spirit of contention reign, there confusion and every vice prevail.

Renouncing therefore every kind of malice, and knavery, hypocrisy, envy, and detraction, as new-born infants desire that mystical milk,

You have heard that it hath been said, "you shall love your neighbour, and hate your enemy:" but I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who traduce you, and persecute you: that ye may be the children of your father who is in heaven, for he causes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust.read more.
but if you love only them who love you, what reward can ye have? do not the heathens themselves do as much? and if ye salute your brethren only, what mighty matter is that? do not even the heathens do the same?

when he had begun to reckon, one was brought to him indebted the sum of ten thousand talents. but being insolvent, his lord gave orders that he, with his wife, and children, and all that he had, should be sold for payment. the servant therefore fell prostrate before him, and cry'd out, Lord, allow me but time and I will pay the whole. upon which the lord of that vassal, touch'd with compassion, gave him his liberty, and discharged him of the debt. but this very servant presently after met with one of his fellow-servants, who owed him an hundred pence: and violently seizing him, said, pay me the debt. and his fellow-servant fell at his feet, and embraced him, saying, allow me time, and I will pay thee all. which he would not allow: but immediately threw him into prison, till he should pay the debt. his fellow-servants upon seeing this were very much concern'd, and went to acquaint their master with what had pass'd. then his lord order'd him to be call'd, and said to him, O thou wicked slave, I forgave thee all thy debt, upon your request: should not you then have had the like compassion for thy fellow servant as I had for thee? so that his lord in great displeasure delivered him to the jayler till he should pay the whole debt. in the same manner will my heavenly father likewise treat you, if ye do not sincerely forgive every one the trespasses of his brother.

bearing with one another, and forgiving one another, when one has any cause of complaint against another: as the Lord forgave you, do you likewise forgive.
