For they themselves report about us what kind of a reception we had with you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve a living and true God,

"Men, why are you doing this? We also are men, of like nature with you, and bring you good news, that you should turn from these vain things to a living God who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and all that is in them.

Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.

For even if I made you sorry with my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret itfor I see that my letter hurt you, though only for a little while now I rejoice, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance; for you became sorrowful as God intended, so that you suffered no loss through us. For godly sorrow produces a repentance that leads to salvation and brings no regret, but worldly sorrow produces death.

But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me a sinner!'

But when he came to himself, he said, 'How many of my father's hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and here I perish with hunger! Therefore it is my judgment that we should not trouble those who are turning to God from among the Gentiles, but that we should write to them to abstain from the pollutions of idols and from fornication and from what is strangled and from blood.
