And it chanced, in those days, that there went out a commandment from Augustus the Emperor, that all the world should be taxed.

And the publican stood afar off, and would not lift up his eyes to heaven, but smote his breast, saying, 'God be merciful to me, a sinner.'
He said, "Yea." And when he was come into the house, Jesus spake first to him, saying, "What thinkest thou Simon? Of whom do the kings of the earth take tribute, or poll money? Of their children, or of strangers?"
And after that, he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, "Follow me."
Peter said unto him, "Of strangers." Then said Jesus unto him again, "Then are the children free.
And all the people that heard, and the publicans, justified God and were baptised with the baptism of John.
And as soon as they were come, they said unto him, "Master, we know that thou art true, and carest for no man: For thou considerest not the degree of men, but teachest the way of God truly: Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar, or not?
And when they were come to Capernaum, they that were wont to gather poll money, came to Peter and said, "Doth your Master pay tribute?"
Nevertheless, lest we should offend them, go to the sea and cast in thine angle, and take the fish that first cometh up: and when thou hast opened his mouth, thou shalt find a piece of twenty pence: that take, and pay for me and thee."
