'Toil' in the Bible
And to Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and eaten of the tree of which I commanded thee saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed be the ground on thy account; with toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;
And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.
If the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had not been for me, surely now you would have sent me away empty-handed. God has seen my affliction and the toil of my hands, so He rendered judgment last night.”
And Joseph called the name of the firstborn Manasseh: For God, said he, hath made me forget all my toil, and all my father's house.
Also [you shall observe] the Feast of Harvest (Weeks, Pentecost, or First Fruits), acknowledging the first fruits of your labor, of what you sow in the field. And [third] the Feast of Ingathering (Booths or Tabernacles) at the end of the year when you gather in [the fruit of] your labors from the field.
Then we cried to the Lord, the God of our fathers, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our affliction and our toil and our oppression;
And they returned to Joshua, and said to him, Let not all the people go up; let about two or three thousand men go up and smite Ai; make not all the people to toil thither, for they are few.
Thou renewest thy witnesses before me and increasest thy displeasure against me; successions of evil and a time of toil are with me.
(If a man die, shall he live again?) all the days of my time of toil would I wait, till my change should come:
Returning [the] products of [his] toil, he will not swallow; according to the profit of his trade, {he will not enjoy},
It is vain for you to rise up early, To take rest late, To eat the bread of toil; For'so he giveth unto his beloved sleep.
lest strangers be filled with thy wealth, and the fruits of thy toil come into the house of a stranger;
In all toil, there is profit, but the {talk} of lips [leads] only to poverty.
What advantage does man have from all his workWhich he does under the sun (while earthbound)?
All things are full of toil; none can express it. The eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.
Whatever my eyes looked at with desire I did not refuse them. I did not withhold from my heart any pleasure, for my heart was pleased because of all my labor; and this was my reward for all my labor.
Yet when I considered all the effort which I expended and the toil with which I toiled to do, then behold, "Everything [is] vanity and chasing wind! There is nothing profitable under the sun!"
So I hated all my toil with which I have toiled under the sun, for I must leave it behind to someone who will be after me.
And who knows [whether] he will be wise or foolish? Yet he will exercise control of all [the fruit of] my toil with which I toiled wisely under the sun. This also [is] vanity!
So {I began to despair} of all the toil with which I toiled under the sun.
For although a person may toil with great wisdom and skill, he must leave his reward to someone who has not toiled for it. This also [is] vanity and a great calamity.
What does a man acquire from all his labor and from the anxiety that accompanies his toil on earth?
There is nothing better for a person than to eat and drink and {find delight} in his toil. For I also realized that this [is] from the hand of God!
What benefit can a worker gain from his toil?
I have seen the travail that God hath given to the sons of men to toil in.
and also that everyone should eat and drink, and find enjoyment in all his toil, for these things are a gift from God.
I also realized that all [of the] toil and all [of] the skillful work that is done--it [is] envy between one man and {another}. This also [is] vanity and chasing wind!
Better is one handful with some rest than two hands full of toil and chasing the wind.
A man who is all alone with no companion, he has no children nor siblings; yet there is no end to all his toil, and he is never satisfied with riches. He laments, "For whom am I toiling and depriving myself of pleasure?" This also is futile and a burdensome task!
Two [are] better than the one, for they enjoy a better reward for their toil.
Just as he came forth from his mother's womb, naked will he return as he came, and he will take nothing in his hand that he may carry away from his toil.
This also [is] a grievous illness. Exactly as he came, so he will go. What profit [does] he gain for all his toil for the wind?
Look! I have discovered what is good and fitting: to eat and to drink and {to enjoy} all [the fruit of] the toil with which one toils under the sun during the number of the days of his life that God gives to him--for this [is] his lot.
To every man whom God has given wealth, and possessions, he has also given him the ability to eat from them, to receive his reward and to find enjoyment in his toil; these things are the gift of God.
All of a man's toil [is] for his mouth-- yet his appetite is never satisfied.
So I recommend the enjoyment of life, for there is nothing better on earth for a person to do except to eat, drink, and enjoy life. So joy will accompany him in his toil during the days of his life which God gives him on earth.
and I saw all the work of God, I concluded that man cannot discover the work that is done under the sun. Even though man may labor in seeking, he will not discover; and [more than that], though a wise man thinks and claims he knows, he will not be able to find it out.
Enjoy life with the woman whom you love all the days of your fleeting life which He has given to you under the sun; for this is your reward in life and in your toil in which you have labored under the sun.
The toil of a fool so wearies him that he does not even know how to go to a city.
thou hast not brought me the small cattle of thy burnt-offerings, neither hast thou glorified me with thy sacrifices. I have not caused thee to toil with an oblation, nor wearied thee with incense.
Thou hast bought me no sweet cane with money, neither hast thou filled me with the fat of thy sacrifices; but thou hast made me to toil with thy sins, thou hast wearied me with thine iniquities.
They won't toil in vain nor bear children doomed to misfortune, for they will be offspring blessed by the LORD, they and their descendants with them.
{Why} did I come out from [the] womb, to see toil, and sorrow, and [to] {end my days in shame}?
This is what the LORD of the Heavenly Armies says: "The broad wall of Babylon will be completely leveled, and its high gate set on fire. and so the nations toil for nothing, and the nations weary themselves only for fire."
He hath built against me, and encompassed me with gall and toil.
“She has wearied Me with toil,Yet her great rust has not gone from her;Let her rust be in the fire!
And Ephraim said, "Surely, I am rich, I gained wealth for myself; in all my toil they have not found guilt in me that is [sin].
“Is it not indeed from the Lord of hostsThat peoples toil for fire,And nations grow weary for nothing?
I called for a drought on the land and the hill country, on the grain, on the new wine, on the oil, on what the ground produces, on men, on cattle, and on all the labor of your hands.”
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
Consider the lilies how they grow: they toil not, they spin not; and yet I say unto you, that Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
and we toil, working with our own hands; when we are reviled, we bless; when we are persecuted, we endure;
So then, my beloved brethren, be firm, immovable, abounding always in the work of the Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord.
by floggings, by imprisonments; by facing riots, by toil, by sleepless watching, by hunger and thirst;
in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, through hunger, thirst, many periods of fasting, coldness, and nakedness.
Let the stealer steal no more, but rather let him toil, working what is honest with his hands, that he may have to distribute to him that has need.
holding fast the word of life, so that in the day of Christ I will have reason to glory because I did not run in vain nor toil in vain.
Yes, and I beg you also, my faithful yoke-fellow, to help these women who have shared my toil in connection with the Good News, together with Clement and the rest of my fellow labourers, whose names are recorded in the Book of Life.
