Professor Cerise's Yamper (Japanese: サクラギ博士のワンパチ Dr. Sakuragi's Wanpachi) is a Pokémon owned by Professor Cerise. Yamper is especially fond of Cerise's daughter, Chloe, and is often seen with her when she is home or at the Cerise Laboratory.

History

Pre-series

As revealed in There's a New Kid in Town!, Professor Cerise received Yamper from a friend in the Galar region, and he soon became a family pet. Yamper arrived before Parker was born and Chloe was only a young child at the time. Chloe became jealous thinking her parents were giving Yamper more attention than her. At one point, Chloe told Yamper that she wished he would go away. Yamper disappeared after this and Chloe went looking for him at a local park, only to be frightened by a group of approaching Venonat. Yamper appeared and scared them off, quickly forming a particularly strong friendship with Chloe.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Yamper first appears in Legend? Go! Friends? Go!, where he is waiting in front of the Cerise Laboratory to greet Chloe on her way back from school, but instead meets Ash and Pikachu. Yamper gives the overly-curious Ash a jolt, but greets Pikachu amicably with a lick on his cheek. When Chloe arrives, Yamper greets her and follows her to the laboratory.

In Best Friend...Worst Nightmare!, Yamper protects the lab from a wild Gengar that had invaded the Cerise Laboratory. After a Gengar comes into the lab, Yamper senses it and tries to attack it, but instead bounces right off. Still, he reveals its presence to Ash, Pikachu, Goh, and Scorbunny who decide to search for the Gengar. Yamper helps the boys during their search, using his nose to sniff Gengar out, but their attempts to stop Gengar were ultimately unsuccessful. Shortly after Gengar's escape, Chloe returns to the Laboratory, and Yamper immediately stops what he is doing to come to the lobby and greet her. At that moment, Gengar suddenly appears behind Chloe and launches a Shadow Ball at her, but Yamper quickly intercepts it. Chloe scoops Yamper in her arms and tries to escape, but Gengar prevents her from doing so. Gengar then uses its Psychic powers to keep Ash and the others from interfering. Regaining consciousness, Yamper struggles out of Chloe's arms and gets ready to battle once more. Professor Cerise, who had just arrived on the scene, commands Yamper to use Spark, but Yamper does not receive the command. Ren and Chrysa realize that Yamper could not hear the Professor because he was single-handedly focused on protecting Chloe, prompting Cerise to tell his daughter to give Yamper the command. Chloe, who had never battled before, hesitates, but soon tells Yamper to use Spark, with the resulting attack sending the Ghost Pokémon flying out of the research facility.

In There's a New Kid in Town!, Yamper finds a Pidove that has an injured wing and brings it to the house. Chloe and Parker help it to recover, causing Yamper to become jealous of the attention that Chloe was giving Pidove. Over the next two days, Yamper becomes increasingly annoyed by Pidove, whom insists on riding on his back. Later, a Fearow attacks Pidove, but Yamper, under Chloe's command, protects Pidove by attacking fearow with Spark. Pidove is later returned to its rightful Trainer, with Yamper seeing his new friend off.

In To Train, or Not to Train, Yamper introduces Chloe to an Eevee that was hiding from Eevee Evolution Lab scientists. Although, Yamper had previously been jealous of Pidove for the attention it received from Chloe, Yamper never exhibits jealousy towards Eevee. Instead, he excitedly welcomes Eevee when Chloe decides to catch her.

In Big Brother to the Rescue!, Yamper scurries around Cerise Park helping Goh's Pokémon.

In This Could be the Start of Something Big!, Yamper attends a surprise party hosted by the Lab members commemorating Goh and Ash's departure. After that, Yamper poses for a group photo with Goh, Ash, and the others.

Personality and characteristics

Yamper and Chloe

Yamper is normally a friendly Pokémon and appears to feel most comfortable around Chloe, being seen napping belly-up right next to her. Out of the Cerise household, Yamper likes Chloe the most, despite her, at times, distant attitude towards him, and according to her little brother Parker, he only accepts food from her. Yamper is very protective of Chloe and is quick to throw himself at anything that he sees as a threat to her, despite his small size. In Dreams Are Made of These!, he was even ready to fight a Lugia in order to keep her safe, before it was revealed to be a trap set by Team Rocket. In contrast, Yamper seems mostly indifferent towards his actual Trainer, to the point where his family joked that Yamper liked him the least. In Memories of a Warming Kindness!, Yamper was shown wanting to go with Chloe for a sleepover when Parker asked him to go with him. Yamper only gave in when Chloe asked him to go with her brother.

Yamper appears to dislike being smothered with affection or having his personal space invaded. In Legend? Go! Friends? Go!, he shocked Ash, who had never seen a Yamper and chased him down to examine him out of his curiosity. This first encounter initially left Yamper with a bad impression of Ash, as later in the episode, he was seen barking angrily at the exhausted Ash after he returned to the Laboratory with Goh. However, Yamper appears to have warmed up to Ash, being less hostile to him. He also seems to dislike strangers, growling and barking at Goh's newfound partner, Scorbunny, in Mind-Boggling Dynamax!. Conversely, he got along with Pikachu immediately, giving him a friendly greeting after shocking Ash and later playing with him while Chloe scolded Goh in the same episode.

Yamper tends to get jealous, as seen in There's a New Kid in Town! when Chloe started paying more attention to a Pidove that Yamper had found injured. Despite this, Yamper protected the Pidove from an attacking wild Fearow. Ever since Chloe caught her Eevee, Yamper has shown to get along really well with her, often playing and interacting with her.

As shown in Big Brother to the Rescue!, Yamper tends to patrol Cerise Park and solve any problems the Pokémon living there might have, sometimes fetching another Pokémon to help fix said problem.
