Three bulk polymerization processes are commercially important for the production of methacrylate polymers batch cell casting, continuous casting, and continuous bulk polymerization. Approximately half the worldwide production of bulk polymerized methacrylates is in the form of molding and extmsion compounds, a quarter is in the form of cell cast sheets, and a quarter is in the form of continuous cast sheets. The operation of the cell in a single-compartment mode with a sacrificial anode provokes the electrogeneration of ions in proportion to the charge passed. The most important effect of concentration polarization is to reduce the membrane flux, but it also affects the retention of macromolecules. Retention data obtained with dextran polysaccharides at various pressures are shown in Figure 6.12 [17]. Because these are stirred batch cell data, the effect of increased concentration polarization with increased applied pressure is particularly marked. A similar drop of retention with pressure is observed with flow-through cells, but the effect is less because concentration polarization is better controlled in such cells. Cells which are particularly convenient for work with mercury pool cathodes for both batch and continuous electrolysis were designed by Coleman and Wagenknecht12) and shown in Fig. 3 and 4.
