The category may theoretically sound like a good idea, but if there's no image showing the 12 spies which does not also show Israelites carrying grapes of Canaan‎, then it's not practically useful...

Well, At Least this files (1, 2, 3) shows more than Israelites carrying grapes of Canaan. They show the other spies. The category:The Twelve Spies meant to be a category of files qualify to the article in the same name. The category of Israelites carrying grapes of Canaan is about the artwork, the category of The Twelve Spies is about the subject, the biblical story. -- Geagea (talk) 04:35, 31 March 2015 (UTC)

He was the managing editor of the project, but there's no reason to mention that anywhere except the category page and Wikipedia. License question

Hi Gia. When you get a chance can you take a look at File:Abdelsalam al-Majali Seal of the peace treaty between Israel and Jordan.jpg? It's got a non-commercial license on Flickr, but it says in the EXIF that it's taken by the "Government Press Office" (the rest of the EXIF text is in Hebrew, so I'm assuming the Israeli Government Press Office is the author). Autocar image

Thank you for adding the location to the picture I uploaded of what was (even by 1985) an unusual car in Israel at the time I spotted it (which I guess is why I photographed it). I guess there would have been a few more around ten years earlier.  ?.

My question:

Why have you entered "דלק" by the windscreen? It appears to mean "fuel" but this is not my language so I might be wrong. In any case, if it's a caption intended to explain or clarify ... something, please could you make it a slightly longer caption so that it explains or clarifies ... whatever it is that benefits from being explained or clarified? For my own purposes, it would be nice, also, if you could enter it in a language that more of us understand. Or am I betraying my own quasi-monocultural intellectual limitations by sharing this thought?

Hello Charles01. I visited the same place few times and recognised it. The דלק (Delek) word is a name of petrol company and it is written on the sun protector inside the car. Thank you for the clarification. I wonder if it might be helpful, if you leave the "דלק" flag on the image, to explain why it is there on the flag window itself. But then again, I think there are very many more important things to worry about.

Either way, I only visited Israel one time in my life (till now...), and as far as I remember I only visited Akko/Acre one day. I was staying on the edge of Jerusalem and rented a car for a couple of days to drive up north. But yes, it was certainly photographed in Israel and now I also rediscover where in Israel. Well Template:City in Israel is not finished yet and I am still working with it to improve it and may be suggested it as a model to other countries category also. Together with this template I'm try to create a format gallery page like I already started - Tiberias. This page is not finished yet but after I'll finish it the page will be really useful for users. It partially translated to hebrew and you can add Arabic or any other language as you wish. So the efforts to translate to other languages should be toward the gallery page rather then the template. This template is more to Commons user. It make their work easier.

Regarding to Template:Haifa District you can use he:תבנית:מחוז חיפה if you want to translate to hebrew. It is only a template of one district so there is much to do her. -- Geagea (talk) 01:44, 8 January 2016 (UTC)

I still don't have a source that would allow to throw a stone into the swamp of political correctnes without repercussions, but how about this one for "Wikipedia:Did you know": a future four-star (full) general and NATO commander, in his captain's days as West Point instructor moonlights as a bridge (card game) referee at the bridge tournament in New York City dubbed by the press as "The Bridge Battle of the Century", and earning by the way half of his monthly captain's salary each evening. As the games go deep into the night, his wife drives him back to West Point while he sleeps in the car to get some rest before teaching his morning class. Somebody, most probably a disgruntled player, rattles on him. West Point superintendent comes to his 8 a.m. chemistry class and later reports to his superiors that he is ready to recommend all his instructors to start playing bridge after observing a perfect lesson. Our hero becomes a bridge partner of general Eisenhower, follows him as his chief of staff to Europe during World War II, plans invasion to North Africa and Italy, and is called "The Brain" by his colleagues for his analytical abilities. Eventually, in 1953-1956 he becomes the NATO chief guy and gets ready to make war on commies; then, after retirement from the Army, as president of American Red Cross he visits Russia and allegedly gets some kind of a ceremonial award there; overall, a stand-up guy with two sons who followed him to the Army. The stuff is fresh and located here: Alfred Gruenther; I also digged good pictures of him which are rare:

Aboriginal flag

Just a comment... I am pinging multiple people about that close, since it was massive. A flag is not 'applied art' in the literal meaning of the term in English... the design applied is not just for an aesthetic effect, but instead the entire point of the creative work. It would still be the same creative work if applied to any other object... painted on a wall, on a t-shirt, whatever, and a blank piece of fabric without the design would not just be less 'pretty', but be entirely meaningless. My reading of the translation of the Knesset discussion gave no indication that the meaning of the language in Hebrew was otherwise... the terms were discussed as applying to three-dimensional objects, where the aesthetic design is incidental to the actual function. That is not the case for a flag, where the 'function' is merely to display the image itself. I hope you understand why I closed it as I did... I actually tried to look for a justification for keeping them, as I think protecting the actual design is dumb... but the Australian court did so, and we cannot ignore case law. As I mentioned there, I'm not an expert in law but seems to me that the solution as mentioned by Clindberg was reasonable. If the photo shows only the flag itself it might be problematic but if it is a part of a statue (as it was with an explanation about the Aborigines in Australia a bit down to the flag) seems to me ok. You also mentioned that you have read the Knesset discussion about the term "applied art'" but the Knesset discussion is not the showing the the legal situation. Hey Geagea. The map you added is clearly innacurrate, and looks like a map one of them maps pan-nationalists with an agenda would make. A simple research would show you that it is heavily innacurrate [2]. According to the map you added there are no Kurds in Turkey, and that Turkic speaking people in Iran make up a majority as far the Lorestan Province (which is populated by Lors) [3]. Furthermore several other provinces where other Iranian languages are spoken as majority (Gilan and Mazandaran) is according to the map also Turkic speaking [4]. This is really frustrating, the map completely ignores the presence of several other ethnic groups, such as the Gilaks (I'm half Gilak myself), who are the majority in the Gilan province, not Turkic speaking people, which this silly Pan-nationalistic map states. I guess the Gilaks, Talysh, Kurds, Mazandarians, western Persians, and Lors suddenly became extinct. The correct place to get attention is wikipedia article talk page. Commons is only place of media file repository. We don't aim to solve questions like which map is accurate. Commons allows to upload few versions of all opinions. Wikipedians should choose which is accurate, suitable etc. Unfortunately there is no easy way. Alright, let me say it in this way; I am talking to MYSELF in the talk page about whether the map should be changed or not ([11] and also this one [12]). No one is answering, what's the point really? I have done everything to have that dumb Pan-Turkic map changed, but nothing has happened so far. Meanwhile Maurice is really enjoying himself, having somehow managed to get what he want - heck he isn't even taking part in the 'ongoing' discussion in the talk page. @Geagea: , I would like to give my opinion regarding this, if I may so. I fully respect your reasoning, but its for the same reasons you state (e.g "discussing through the talk page", etc.) that indeffed people on eng.wiki are still given a free pass to continue with their havoc on Wikimedia. These people were indeffed for a good reason. An user who's indeffed on Wikipedia, and whos put on Arbcom sacntions for content related to the dispute that user:HistoryofIran accordingly raised, should not be allowed to continue to edit on Wikimedia or any of its related projects, at least in such way. For the sake of Wikimedia's and Wikipedia's integrity. I can count and mention numerous other similar cases where this was dealt with accordingly by the Wikimedia admins. I would sincerely and politely like to ask you to revise your stance regarding the issue as brought up HistoryofIran. The maps uploaded by the user in question here are righfully labeled as total hoax and should be deleted. To make them linger forth on Wikimedia we would basically be supporting the same reasons as for why he was put under Arbcom sanctions (and was indeffed on Wikipedia). LouisAragon, I removed the protection over the file so it can be nominated to deletion. I hope it won't be a target to edit warring. if the edit warring will continue I'll have to block users. If the file is basically wrong and not legitimately in use in other projects than you may have a case. But don't count on it. Commons allows different kind of maps even for discussion in a talk pages. Commons is not Wikipedia, and files uploaded here do not necessarily need to comply with the Neutral point of view and No original research requirements imposed by Wikipedia sites. (talk page stalker) As an EN wikipedian who has tried to remove some of the hoax maps there, and in some other-language wikipedias, I can confirm that it is a hopeless cause, that the hoaxes just pop up again. I came here to try to get the files deleted, in the hope that the wikipedias could be fixed in that way, but as can be seen here, the spamming is so effective that there's nothing that a content editor can do. I don't think that deleting that one map would be a sufficient remedy, and after it is deleted there would be that much less evidence for some more fundamental fix for this problem that when someone reports that a map is a hoax, admins who are not specialist content editors don't believe the allegation. I'm not really a specialist in this area either, so I'm not keen to take on a huge project of finding and requesting deletion for every one of the host of hoax maps. So, I don't think I will be nominating it for deletion a second time. I could help out if there were a major effort under way, but tilting at windmills isn't particularly appealing. @Sminthopsis84: , I dont know about the other countries you mentioned, but the beef with Iran is usually linked with Azerbaijan and Turkey. Literally 9 out of 10 issues Iran has on Wikipedia and Wikimedia (and vice versa) are linked with these two neighboring nations. Thanks for your acknowledgement of the visible issue though. @HistoryofIran: <sarcasm mode on>, no dude, its obviously not a bad picture, you should request it to be deleted manually, while we wait for some 20 + ips to spam it in other Wikipedia language pages. Interesting. I guess that I'm seeing part of the same problem, but further east, much of it removed as sock-puppet additions, but some remain. There has been a lot of sock-puppet hegemony claiming that Dari is nothing but Farsi, and that Kalash people are Hindu. That was mixed with, e.g., adding Uzbekistan where it was barely relevant (e.g., here), chopping the explanatory material off a map so it can be misrepresented (that map has gone, it was ubiquitous, but one example of an edit to add it is here), making a map and using text to put Afghanistan into Central Asia (map also gone, e.g., here and here). Part of the same problem, perhaps. I have never looked systematically, and consider this to be outside my main expertise, but I come across pieces sometimes. User:HistoryofIran, calling somebody else "racist" is not very much helpful her. It is highly recommended to avoid such a comments.

Regarding to the Lenguas Oguz.png map. Our policies does not support deletion of such maps. Just like you have mentioned this map. If it is in use in other projects it is in scope her. We (commons) cannot decide for de.wiki which map to use. It is their decision and their responsibility. NPOV policy in commons is different than in wiki projects. Hi Geagea, in my opinion it makes no sense to have categories on single book/journal pages such as File:Die Gartenlaube (1855) 013.jpg. That is not the way it working. Every file should have all categories needed to describe it. "Page from a book", "illustration", what we can see in the illustration etc. You are not moving categories but adding categories. -- Geagea (talk) 09:49, 15 March 2016 (UTC)

You are right to have categories describing the page itself (such as page with illustration etc.) but categories referring the contained pic should be part of the extracted pic when it exists. With this approach you waste categories with unreqired media. But i understand that media needs to be linked somehow. This year will be the tenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2015) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. In Round 1, there were 1322 candidate images. There are 56 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category. In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 28 May 2016, 23:59:59 UTC.

Help needed with he.wiki article

Hi Gia. I just noticed that the infobox image () used in the he.wiki article for my city, , is actually a photo of Sparks, Nevada and the Sparks Marina and not Reno. Reno is to the West of this. FYI: How I suffered harassment in Hebrew Wikipedia

Dear Geagea,

FYI:

I suffered much harassment Hebrew Wikipedia users could not tolerate a true intellectual. The fact that the owner Ph.D in light of discussions annoyed them. They wanted everything simple and superficial without the insight of scholars. It was the first step.

In the second stage I suffered from the fact that I wrote a higher level. People were upset about complexity.

And the third stage suffered bullies my site which we think was annoyed by them. Everyone should be small and endangering workers in Hebrew Wikipedia.

And the fourth phase encountered violent behavior against me and against my reputation on social networking sites, like Facebook. I have called lies and invective against me incredible encouragement from Admins in Hebrew Wikipedia.

I could not sit still and shut up in front of the phenomenon, and will not sit quietly in the future.

I hope you sober up and realize that there are limits to the suffering and silence.

First, from all the reasons you have mentioned above you should stay out from edit waring in thous users talk pages. My talk page is not the correct place to raise this kind of allegations. The fact is that you are indef blocked in he.wiki for harassment of users including user Hanay. So edit waring in there talk page is unacceptable. You shuld not edit waring in any of other users talk page especially in the circumstances you mentioned.

Second, regarding to Umm Junieh. Commons is only place of media file repository. We don't aim to solve questions like that. The solution of commons in this cases is very simple. We use double category. General discussion about the correct place of Umm Junieh is o.k. They may or may not agree. For commons it is very simple problem.

I have a problem in giving a confirmation from the image's creator: he asked me to upload this image to wikipedia, and I assured that he is the creator of this image (in some email messages). It's the wikipedia user Rubinshabi, who is new in wikipedia, and probably don't know how to upload images to wikipedia. I don't know him prsonally, so I can't give a hand-written confirmation as I need to. I can, if it helps, send the mesage that he confirms that the is the creator of the image. When Commons users uploading quality files to commons, there is a good chance that they will be used by others. Actually this is the purpose of the the project. User:Godot13 is one of the photographer of high quality files to commons. And his photos probabely be used by other sites. A. It is possible that the date by google referring to the date the article site page created and not specifically the upload date of the photo. You have to check it in other means. If the photo uploaded today and already widely in use in other sites then it probably copyvio.
B. I do not see any of the google dates before 30.1.2016.
C. The photo in the specific link you provided taken directly from wikimedia.
D. Users that uploading a lots of quality photos should be respected as so and we hope we got more of them. Blaming them with uploading copyvio photos should be base on good evidence. This is not the case. Not the user. not the photo. Please move on. -- Geagea (talk) 09:18, 10 January 2017 (UTC)

Greetings, User:Geagea! What would you advise as a useful niche activity to employ my translation/editing skills in the Commons, particularly with materials related to Israel. I offer as a sample my recent edit on File:מחלף סומך.svg:

• Adding an English-language description, where lacking, to files with Hebrew-language names
• For the graphic image here, I consulted a map and added the nearest major geopolitical place indicator
• Also - I'm highly interested in Categorization (being a junior commando in information storage/retrieval)

Are there already contributors working systematically in a similar capacity? What would you suggest as a systematic approach to identifying such files? (I considered by Category - e.g. my first initiated project was uncategorized images of MKs before the last national elections.) Deborahjay, happy to see that you are interested using your skills to categorize materials related to Israel. There is much to do in categories that contain general category of Israel like: Category:Geography of Israel, Category:Nature of Israel, Category:Landscapes of Israel, Category:Architecture of Israel, Category:Cities in Israel.

I made thorough work on the category of the cities Tiberias and Acre but that not finished yet. I made special template to make the categorization easier. If you wish you can take another city and work on it. Also, Category:Tel Aviv-Yafo needs much work.

I have also a list of the new files added to the categories of Israel her. So you can see the files uploaded and check if they needed more categories.

Category:Tel Abel Beth Maacah

Hi Geagea, all the pictures in this cateory belong to Tel Abel Beth Maacah Excavations, see here their site, and here on facebook, I am sure that the uploader is part of the project, see User:Moshechn/sandbox. He just did not know that he need to send an OTRS permission. This pictures are important.
