EMILY BENITO
Journalist, Writer, Creator
Hello,
A bit about me:
I am Emily Benito, and I am a reporter at KOLO 8 News Now, a news station in Reno, NV. I graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Alabama School of Communication and Information Sciences with a Bachelor’s degree in News Media while simultaneously interning at WVUA 23 News and Alice Magazine.
My hometown is Santa Cruz, California. Growing up in a town surrounded by trees and mountains contributed to my love for nature and also my love for my community.
This is probably why I love working in broadcast news and becoming involved with my community. Ultimately, I would love to travel to many places across the United States and Europe for my job and experience different places and people.
Work Experience
June 2023 - Present
As a reporter at KOLO 8 News Now I have been able to improve my reporting skills and gain extensive experience in live shots in many types of weather. From fires to rainstorms... the news must go on! I have also had the opportunity to anchor weekend weather casts over the last few months and have gained skills in reading weather radar forecasts and using the weather wall. I meet my deadlines, produce newsworthy story ideas, and have built great professional relationships and gained many mentors who strive to help me do my best.
August 2021- May 2023
As a reporter at WVUA 23 I was able to hone my reporting skills and learn how to work well to meet deadlines, I built strong connections within the community and my workplace. I loved that this job allowed me to meet people I never would have known. I learned things that could only be taught through community and understanding. Due to my experiences here, I can proficiently edit and link stories to a newscast and enjoy the professional connections I have made throughout my time at the station. This experience provides me with encouragement and constructive advice for the future.
August 2019- May 2023
As an Alice Magazine writing contributor, I wrote magazine articles related to fashion, health, and lifestyle. I learned organization and time management skills in order to meet deadlines. From this experience I learned many things about myself including that I work well independently and cooperate well with others.

While attending Monte Vista I was president of the National Honor Society chapter and I was captain of the equestrian team. I was also a contributing writer and editor for the online school newspaper, The Vista.
