Biographies , artists etc.
Hello! So I guess I violated a policy about outside links. It was to the artists being talked about website and I'm not a constant editor so I didn't know you couldn't link since you have a hyperlink tool to use.
So a member of a Band which had hit records etc. and a recording artist and session musician is listed on the bands Wikipedia page and on other pages about the songs he recorded on. He doesn't have a Wikipedia page but as a reference I linked to his website since his name goes to a website not associated with him. I got messages saying you can't link to an outside webpage. So since a majority of the other musicians have links I thought it was OK.
I didn't really appreciate you (The editors) making me feel like I was committing a great sin for wanting people to have an additional resource if they wanted one. You could have just said oh you can only link him to a wikipedia page in his name.
Some of your rules are not that understandable. I looked them up after. Thought you were talking about spam etc. etc. not just linking to an artist website. You might just say that. Even though an artist is mentioned or the subject of the page you can't link to their artist website it must be a Wikipedia page and on the Wikipedia page for the artist then you can link to their website.
You made the process of trying to engage more with the site unpleasant. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnnysings (talk • contribs) 00:20, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Johnnysings, I'm sorry that you felt as if you were feeling villainized. If you wanted to add a link to the official website, you could consider adding it to the "External links" section at the bottom of the article (or adding the section if it doesn't exist). External links should be used sparingly and should rarely be added directly to the body. If the link can be used as a source, just add it as an inline citation. You can check out WP:REFB for a guide to citing sources. If you are ever confused about a policy, you can always ask, we'd be happy to assist you in any way possible. Thanks, EDG 543 (message me) 01:35, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your answer. I appreciate your reply and how you approached the subject. I will keep that in mind about the links and inline citations etc., If I have something in the future. I guess that these days linking to things and having everyone link every website and social media account (I don't really do social media) just more informational but still artists websites etc. so it didn't even occur to me that linking wouldn't be OK, heck my phone and other devices are linking me to things automatically that I don't want to be linked too. So thank you again for the information and your kind reply. Best wishes. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnnysings (talk • contribs) 04:08, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
How do I preemptively archive a url?
I've tried looking at the wiki page on how to archive a web citation but it doesn't make sense to me. Can anyone point me to a resource on this?--Phil of rel (talk) 01:40, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Phil of rel:Well, Its relatively simple. The process is described in Help:Archiving_a_source. It depends a bit on the archive organisation that you choose. Victor Schmidt (talk) 05:38, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Oh yes, I just realised I wasn't reading the full page. Thank you for your assistance.--Phil of rel (talk) 13:01, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Essay/guideline on a blocked user writing a practice article
There's an essay or guideline somewhere about a user who has been blocked for disruptive editing having the chance to select an article and significantly expand it within their userspace, and then for an admin to review their work and consider an unblock. I'd like to refer to something in it but I can't find it at the moment. DanCherek (talk) 13:26, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- No, any user would have to request the unblock before working on the encyclopaedia. Especially if they have an indef block for disruptive editing, working in a sandbox won't help. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talk • contribs) 13:30, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Lee Vilenski: Thanks, I found the thing that I was thinking about: {{2nd chance}}, which isn't formalized as a separate essay but I have seen admins paste it into replies to unblocks. DanCherek (talk) 13:50, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

Make a bot ignore a link
Hello! I was editing 1.1.1.1 and noticed the links for the DNS over HTTPS urls were marked as dead. They returned HTTP 400 errors, as they should because I wasn't making a DNS request. Is there a way to make bots like IABot ignore the link so it isn't marked as dead? Thank you, Cheesetron246 talk 15:56, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Adding references to Wikipedia
Hi there, how do I add references and cites to other websites on relevant articles on Wikipedia? Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zhatty (talk • contribs) 17:34, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Zhatty! The basic structure of a proper reference is to surround the link with ref tags like this:
<ref>example.com</ref>
. Remember not to just paste the link without the ref tags, or it won't end up in list of references at the bottom of the article. See Referencing for beginners for more specifics. Thanks, EDG 543 (message me) 18:31, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
Diff and hist links in a different location on my watchlist
See this screenshot - the "diff" and "hist" buttons just moved from their usual spot next to the bullet, on my watchlist and other recent changes pages like Special:RecentChanges. When I log out and view Special:RecentChanges, it looks fine, so I think it's something to do with my account but I have no idea what. I don't have any fancy scripts that change CSS and I tried clearing my cache but it didn't help. DanCherek (talk) 17:54, 22 March 2021 (UTC)

How to cite individual places using GEOnet Names Server?
I've become aware that, confusingly, GEOnet Names Server is not the same thing as GeoNames. I want to switch my citing practices to GEOnet since it's more reliable. The problem is, though, I can't find a specific url for any individual places on GEOnet. Whereas GeoNames has separate pages for each place, if I search on GEOnet and then click on any of the results, it doesn't link to a new page. The url is always just this: https://geonames.nga.mil/namesgaz/gnsquicksearch.asp
I want to make my citations easily checkable by having a specific url and not making people search through the entire database. Is this possible to do on GEOnet? If not, then what should I do about citing coordinates for places?
Thanks,
3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 23:13, 22 March 2021 (UTC)
- @3 kids in a trenchcoat: try asking the GEOnet technical support folks. There may be a way to format a URL that will act as a query. If they will not or cannot help you, you will need to create a citation that tells your reader how to do the query "manually". e.g., <ref>Search for "Foo City" at {{cite web|url=...}}</ref> -Arch dude (talk) 03:17, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Alright, I will try this. Thanks 3 kids in a trenchcoat (talk) 04:42, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

- @Boyer P. August: Welcome to the Teahouse! It appears you created Draft:K-12 Student Rights While At School under an IP address, and received a notification at User talk:104.11.59.25. Your draft has not been accepted because it has not been submitted for review. If you were to submit it, I suspect it would be rejected because it appears to be a personal essay instead of an encyclopedia article (see WP:NOTESSAY). Help:Your first article has lots of good information about writing a Wikipedia article, which is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia. I suggest you gain experience by improving existing articles before attempting to create a new article. Happy editing! - Oh, but Boyer P. August, it's not just a personal essay, it's an advertisement for the website studentrightsatschool.org and a mishmash of material taken straight from that website, which says nothing about any flavour of copyleft or any waiver of copyright. I can't decide whether to delete it as a copyright violation, as an advertisement, or as obviously unencyclopedic; I'll let some other administrator decide. -- Hoary (talk) 06:03, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- I've deleted this as an advertisement and left some advice on the creator's talk page. Deb (talk) 09:19, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

I need to delete my Wikipedia account but I can't find any page that can do it. Could anyone please help me? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nightseeker Klemont (talk • contribs) 03:46, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Nightseeker Klemont Wikipedia accounts cannot be deleted because we legally must attribute edits to something for copyright purposes. However, if you would like your account to be renamed, that can be done. There is also Vanishing, which basically renames your account to a string of random letters and numbers. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 04:57, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- You have so few contributions to your name that they'd very likely have gone almost completely unnoticed if you hadn't brought up the matter here. Asking either to be renamed or to be made to vanish would use up somebody else's time, so please ask for neither and instead just ignore your account and forget about it. -- Hoary (talk) 05:53, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

CSS: max-width:50% does not work the same way as width:50%
I'm trying to improve {{Oldtfdlist}} by making it responsively scale, but without it going above 50% width, which is what it's currently set to be always. I can't figure out how to do this. "max-width:50%" isn't the same as "width:50%" (when it would have enough text to display that wide, it wraps prematurely). "width:auto" "max-width:50%"
doesn't work. Apparently max-width overrides width. "min-width:auto" "max-width:50%"
doesn't work. I have no idea what to do. Can someone assist? Thanks, DesertPipeline (talk) 06:37, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Hi Please somebody help me I need help!
Many years ago when I first released my music after a while I put it on wikipedia but it was rejected and since i was under a lot of stress at that time I got angry and tried make it again until I got the name banned from creating. I never ever did anything or even attempted and I did so just because i was getting frustrated. I have requested wikipedia to remove the ban... but i don't know how the process works. Can you please help me? please. I need help. I have done anything I could including a solid article and references. I don't expect to be on wikipedia i just want the ban to be removed it's not my page my music project... the music of so many talented musicians. The name of the page is Discolor Blind and I have added it here but in the last one I tried to put my email then I was referred to you but I accidentally left my email there and i'm worried about spam can you please explain the situation to me? I mean my stupidity shouldn't cause such a permanent result otherwise I could go get many artists banned by doing this. It's not Ashkan Malayeri it's Discolor Blind I was the one who did this stupid thing. Discolor Blind shouldn't be punished for it. Can you please help me? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives I have added it here. Can you please help and guide me? I would appreciate any help and I need it. please help me. I don't even know how you'll get back to me. I reallt need help. It's really stressing me out. I have already put it here and explained. Please do me a favour. Isn't wikipedia supposed to be edited by donators... i'm not good enough... my only contributions to wikipedia has ever been one sentence lines this is too complex for me. Please help me out please. The name of the band is Discolor Blind. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Edit_filter/False_positives It is here. Please help me out with this. Will you do that? please? I just don't wanna even be on an encyclopedia trying to get myself in here... after that failed I just get the idea that you're not the one who should write your wikipedia and if nobody is writing it it's probably not time. but can you please remove the ban for me so i don't have to worry about it. that's it. Please. It doesn't have to be done by me. I know wikipedia is edited by contributors but can you please help me man? I'm just a composer with a lot of problems... this isn't my thing... last time i tried it resulted in this... please man. help me out. i have nobody and this seems like the biggest challenge and it shouldn't because it's only because of an act of anger by myself. please help me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 142.118.35.231 (talk) 15:25, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

- I'm sorry your experience with Wikipedia has been confusing and stressful. It sounds like you understand that you should not have tried to create a page about a project you are involved with. You say you do not want to create the page now, and that you understand you shouldn't, but that the protection on the page is causing you stress. You seem to view it as a punishment. Please don't view it as a punishment, and please don't let it cause you stress. If, at some point down the road Discolor Blind becomes sufficiently notable to have an article written about it, and someone unaffiliated with the band chooses to write an article about it, the article can be written as a draft and then, once there is something acceptable to put in article space, the protection can be lifted and the draft can be accepted. There is no reason to lift the protection now, and no reason for you to be stressed about it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 15:57, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

- Incidentally, the reason you are triggering the edit filter is that your edit contains profanity. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:05, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Also, there is no need to provide lengthy quotes or the text you would like to write about Discolor Blind in the request to have the page unprotected. Wikipedia:Requests_for_page_protection#Current_requests_for_reduction_in_protection_level does say such requests are "generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand," but it wants you to link to a draft in draft space, not copy and paste your draft in the request for reduction in page protection. As you appear to have acknowledged above, you, as a member of Discolor Blind, should not be writing about Discolor Blind. You are not helping your case at this point. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:09, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

One-Answer Surveys
Does a survey that contains only one answer take the only answer into consideration, or is the survey neglected? Dr Salvus 13:44, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Dr Salvus, technically, a survey with one answer isn't a survey at all, as the one answer would always equal 100% of the responses. Now, if the respondents could choose to abstain from taking the survey, that could be considered the second choice. Is this related to Wikipedia in any way? Thanks, EDG 543 (message me) 13:46, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- EDG 543 Yes, it is. For example this survey is one-answered. We need an answer to know what we need to do. Dr Salvus 13:53, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

- Dr Salvus, I'm a little confused. You don't need to wait for a bot to archive the discussion, nor does the bot have any bearing on the outcome of the discussion. If you want to gain a consensus, you should just wait a while to see what others in the WikiProject have to say, and then you or another editor can make whatever change is necessary. Is the "album-notes" template outdated? Why not warn?
I tried to use this template
to insert two citations to record liner notes (at Michael Stanley), and I painstakingly filled the fields, but then got multiple errors when I previewed my edits. This template includes fields that are no longer used such as Artist and Publisherid, fields that are no longer used as described here such as Format, and fields that are required (when Format is included) such as URL. It looks like instead one should use this template
I did that, redoing my citations completely, and now they are fine. But:
1. Am I right that the "album-notes" template is obsolete?
2. If so, why doesn't its template page say that, and discourage its use? In fact, why is it out there at all, to be found and used by unsuspecting editors?
Thank you.Sullidav (talk) 14:54, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- So, as far as I can tell, Cite album-notes redirects to Cite AV media notes - therefore, they are the same template and use of Album notes will just appear as media notes. The page for the Cite AV media notes template lists out all of the parameters that can be used. The page does not include any parameters such as "artist." I'm not sure where you are seeing that. ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia talk 15:05, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Redirected as a result of this discussion. If you want to use the name
{{cite album-notes}}
it is ok to do that though it is likely that someone will come along an rename it to{{cite AV media notes}}
. cs1|2 template parameter names are never capitalized;|artist=
and|publisherid=
have been deprecated and are no longer supported;|format=
(the source's file format) is still supported. - You used
|others=Michael Stanley
. Did Michael Stanley actually contribute to the liner notes? If yes, Michael Stanley should be credited as an author (|author=Michael Stanley
; if no, Michael Stanley should be omitted from the template. - —Trappist the monk (talk) 15:39, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
Thanks for these responses, Trappist the monk and ‡ Єl Cid of Valencia.
I solved my problem. When I tried later to look at that template page that I had linked above for "album-notes," Wikipedia redirected me to the "AV media notes" template, and that confused me, because earlier today I had been looking at a different page for an "album-notes" template that listed deprecated parameters and gave inaccurate descriptions. My browser history answered it. A Google search on something like "wikipedia template to cite album liner notes" had led me to this page, which I had used: https://simple.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Cite_album-notes/doc . I was trying to work quickly then, but *now* I notice from the url and the header that this page is from "Simple English Wikipedia" which was new to me but apparently is a totally different Wikipedia that still uses the different, outdated "album-notes" template, with a page for its parameters.
I know parameter names are never capitalized, but in this discussion of them it was more clear to capitalize them. Now I am using quotes, if you prefer that.
Michael Stanley did not contribute to the liner notes, they are uncredited (& just lists, rather than text) and are on two records by him. Here's why I listed him under the "others" parameter: 1) The error message when I used the deprecated "artist" tag suggested using "others" for that information instead, and 2) the note on the "AV media notes" template for the "others" field describes it as for "Artist, producers, etc." Are those two messages wrong? I am open to other ways to do this, but it seems like Michael Stanley's name should be included in the citation, somehow, as the artist on whose records the cited liner notes are. (Even if the record label and ID may be there, referencing liner notes by listing only the record title without the name of the artist seems to me unhelpful at best, and possibly ambiguous at worst.) Thanks, again. Sullidav (talk) 16:55, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah, simple.wiki is a different project with its own rules and ways of doing things; for whatever reason, editors there have not chosen to deprecate simple:Template:cite album-notes.
|others=
is for 'other' contributors to the cited source (illustrators, translators, etc). In this case the cited source is the text on the backside of the album jacket. You say that Michael Stanley did not contribute to that text so|others=Michael Stanley
isn't really appropriate. The jacket art at Friends and Legends shows Michael Stanley in comparatively large type when compared to the album's actual title so you might do this:{{cite AV media notes |title=''Michael Stanley: ''Friends and Legends}}
– the odd-seeming italic markup here gets the rendering right- Michael Stanley: Friends and Legends (Media notes).
{{cite AV media notes}}
and{{cite AV media}}
are in need of rewriting; there just hasn't been any progress made in that direction because no one yet has had the desire to attempt to herd the cats into a consensus corral; so we limp along with what we've got...- —Trappist the monk (talk) 17:39, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

Does Wikipedia have an article about the murder of Terry King?
This ---> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D7nPCwc8jrc&ab_channel=TrueCrimeBrewery <--- was a pretty infamous murder case. Two little kids were suspected -- and perhaps even tried/convicted -- of the killing of their father. I remember it being big news. And, if I remember correctly, they were the two youngest murder defendants in the USA. Does Wikipedia have an article somewhere? I can't seem to find anything at all. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 14:58, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Probbably no, WP:BLP1E. Victor Schmidt (talk) 15:12, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Thanks. What does BLP1E have to do with this case? I'd assume that the article would be "death of" or "murder of" ... and not "name of young killer". No? Such an article would not invoke BLP1E, would it? Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:47, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- I think what Victor Schmidt is saying is that the murdered subject might not be notable enough for their own article. There's also WP:BIO1E for more info on determining notability of a person in regards to one event.
- Alternatively, no one may have started an article on them. Has an article about the subject been previously deleted? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 16:45, 23 March 2021 (UTC)

- Thanks. I guess my thinking was that the death was quite notable (its circumstances, etc.). Not that the victim himself was notable. So, I had assumed I'd find an article somewhere. I tried all of the obvious search terms. Nothing popped up. Perhaps, I will start the article. In the case of a "notable" death (and its article) ... I presume that neither the victim nor the defendants, per se, need notability on their own. Hence, we include the info as a "death of" article. Of which, we have many. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:07, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Has an article about the subject been previously deleted? Good question. I don't know. And I don't know how to find out / search for such a query. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 17:09, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- The way I check is to search for a likely title, e.g. Murder of Terry King, and click on the redlink. If it is a deleted article, it will provide a history. Clarityfiend (talk) 17:44, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Joseph A. Spadaro: Another way to search is to Google "murder of terry king wiki" (other search engines are available). Having done that I found that Alex and Derek are featured in List of youngest killers, but I don't think the case has its own page. nagualdesign 18:52, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Administrators can search deleted titles. The content is not searchable but can be viewed with page history. Terry King (patricide) was deleted in 2009. The stated reason seems invalid. Thanks, all. Hmmmmmmmmmm ... some follow-up questions, if I may. (1) What was the original reason to delete the article ... and why was that reason "invalid"? Just curious. (2) Also, is there somewhere where an editor can see/read all of this history/documentation? (3) So,if I did not -- on a mere whim -- ask my question on this Help Page, that article would have remained deleted for the past 10-12 years ... and would continue to be so into the indefinite future? I don't get that ... seems like a big oversight, internally. Thanks. Joseph A. Spadaro (talk) 15:10, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- The deletion log [2] says "G7: One author who has requested deletion or blanked the page". G7 says: "If requested in good faith and provided that the only substantial content of the page was added by its author." It was deleted by the author who was an administrator. Admins can delete their own creations per G7 without a discussion if they are the only substantial contributor. In this case there were substantial contributions [3] by others so G7 was invalid, also in 2009 which had the same rule. The admin has since retired and relinquished their admin rights so there is no need to take it further than restoring the page. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:45, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Competence for GAs and FLs
As I have failed a lot of nominations for GAs and FLs, I would like to gain more competence on this topic. What can I do? Dr Salvus 22:29, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Take your time. It may take a year or two before you have an article ready. Make sure the articles you write are well researched, well sourced, well developed. Pick a topic that interests you and that you can find a lot of information on - I recommend a minor historical event somewhere in the 1800s or early 1900s (pre WWI), those are comparatively easy to come up with sources on and less controversial than post-war topics. Write the article, consider nominating it for DYK - the requirements are not as strict as for featured or good articles and going through the review process will help you learn how to improve the article and your writing in general. Do not nominate any article for FA or GA unless it has at least a B-class rating from a Wikiproject. If the article you are working on gets a rating of less than a B, ask the person who did the assessment what they are looking for that the article needs to improve on, but don't hound or harass them. If they don't want to talk to you, leave them alone. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 23:05, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi, Dr Salvus! Consider taking a look at Wikipedia:Featured list criteria and Wikipedia:Good article criteria. Thanks, EDG 543 (message me) 23:06, 23 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Dr Salvus: They say that just creating a new article on WP is one of the hardest things you can do: and they are right. I've been editing on WP for around 12 years, and have created a number of articles; some are OK in my book, some are low-quality, some have been permanently deleted. But getting an article to 'Featured' or 'Good' status is at least an order of magnitude harder. Not once have I ever remotely considered putting myself through the immense hassle of getting any of 'my' articles to FA or GA status. Consider:
- 1. Your sources must be impeccable. See WP:RELIABLE. Ascertaining whether a quoted source will stand up to the most extreme scrutiny is difficult enough in itself. If you don't know, you will certainly fail. Hint: your sources will almost certainly contain reliable sources themselves, usually in a 'Bibliography' section.
- 2. During the FA or GA process, every single sentence in the article will be checked for grammar, spelling, meaning, coherence, and especially WP:NPOV. There will almost certainly be many tiny niggles about individual phrases. You must be able to express your thoughts/ideas coherently and expressively in the very best English.
- 3. Your chosen referencing scheme (bwahaha, best of luck, fool) must be consistent and applied ruthlessly throughout the article. Completely archived sources will be almost certainly necessary.
- 4. Once the article has achieved the exalted heights of FA or GA, there is nowhere to go except down. Many editors spend a lot of their time "defending" an article's status. You will find yourself spending much more time on talk pages attempting to refute changes to the article. There are some very, very aggressive editors on WP with their own axe to grind, and unless you can engage them in the very best manner (see WP:RESPECT) then your efforts may be set at naught. The upshot of all this is...
- 5. Don't, unless you are utterly determined to defend 'your' corner against all-comers. The very worst thing is to see an article lose a GA or FA status, and then you will know the meaning of failure. I wish you the very best of luck, but you will need much more than that. Stick to to the easy stuff for some time. You will need to be an expert in a given subject, and also an expert Wikipedian, and there ain't many of either. >MinorProphet (talk) 16:46, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

- It looks like you were blocked on Commons and the images were deleted because of copyright violations. You uploaded the images as "own work", meaning you were asserting that you took the photographs yourself, and created the logos yourself. However, the images appear elsewhere on the internet, and on Commons you state that you are a student and employee of the university and were given the photographs by the school. Line feed character and check date values in a tweet
Hi! I found the cite tweet template recently, but I have a problem with it. On this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlanta_FaZe one tweet has an error ""line feed character in |title= at position 57 (help); Check date values in: |date= (help)"", but I don't know what is causing this. Also, the date is "June 24, 2095" but I didn't put a date in the template?? No other tweets on the page have this problem?? - @Piano-ongaku: It's the last reference in the Atlanta FaZe#2019 Season, right? Does the tweet open properly if you click the URL? If I do, Twitter shows 'Something went wrong. Try again.' to me... --CiaPan (talk) 07:40, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- @CiaPan: Yes, that's what it was! I messed up the url! Thank you! --Piano-ongaku (talk) 07:45, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- (Added too late) (e/c) The template {{Cite tweet}} you used uses the {{cite web}} to format the whole reference and the {{TwitterSnowflake}} to format the date based on the tweet's ID. I suppose you entered an invalid tweet ID (the 'number' parameter) and that's why the URL doesn't open properly and a date can't be retrieved. --CiaPan (talk) 07:47, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

- That said, when 16/27 references on an article are tweets, even though they are being used in compliance with WP:ABOUTSELF, the article has a problem in that it is trying to convey information that has not been determined by independent sources to be relevant. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:19, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
Changes in the first paragraph of Wikipedia for an Indian Actor's page.
HI
This is Alifiyah Haji here, from Vidyut Jammwal's team. Vidyut Jammwal is a bollywood actor working in the Hindi Film Industry. We would like to edit his introductory paragraph on Wikipedia.
I'll share the link of his current page and I'll give the content which we would like to edit and update along with the supporting links. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vidyut_Jammwal
The version that we would like to get it reframed to. "Vidyut Jammwal (born 10 December 1980) is the only Indian to be officially recognised by Google as the world's top martial artist in the league of legends such as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Steven Seagal, Donnie Yen and Jean-Claude Van Damme. He is a film actor and stunt performer, who predominantly works in Hindi-language films. He represented India on the global front by featuring on TheRichest list of '10 People You Don't Want To Mess With' along with Bear Grylls and Vladimir Putin. Renowned as a fitness star, Jammwal is credited for popularising Kalaripayattu, mother of all martial arts."
The supporting links to the above information are googlable.

Like the WHO holding Event 201 led by Bill Gates in October of 2019 for a preliminary 'what if' then Covid happens two months later. Doxxing?
I requested a new username a year ago, but now see that my previous edits are still visible under my previous username, which is my actual name, which I would rather they not be. All contributions made under the old username will be re-attributed to the new username, including deleted contributions, preserving the edit history.[a] Old signatures embedded in past posts cannot be changed due to technical limitations of the MediaWiki software, although in some cases collapsing or blanking is possible."
I've already changed my username (the current one is the new one), it's just that all of my old contributions are still connected to the old one, they haven't been re-attributed. Is there a way to request that the collapsing or blanking be done?Hol-Tangings (talk) 14:36, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- @Hol-Tangings: I guess you only refer to the username in signatures. User talk:Hol-Tangings can be blanked but you have no edits there. Other talk pages shouldn't be blanked just because a user has changed name. You can find your old signatures at Special:Contributions/Hol-Tangings or "What links here" on your old user page, and manually change the name to your current name. The old name will still be in the page history. It can also be found in some logs connected to the rename. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:24, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

Urgent- How to paste my content to Wiki
Hi, I am a university administrator trying to copy and paste content on the uni website to wikipedia, but the content was deleted by an administrator due to copyright, even when I cited the source. What can I do to use the content that my organization owns to Wikipedia? Thanks ChiaWeiHo (talk) 15:13, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- You cannot, unless the copyright holder puts it under a license that allows resuse for any purpose. See WP:DCM. Addtionally, this is an encyclopedia, and it is unlikely that your website is written to the standards of an encylopdia article. RudolfRed (talk) 15:22, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- @ChiaWeiHo: Furthermore, you are a paid editor (see WP:PAID), so you must declare your paid status, Do not edit Wikipedia's article about the university directly. Instead, make requests for changes to it: (see WP:COI). In spite of all this, we really do welcome any suggestions you may wish to make that will improve the article. -Arch dude (talk) 16:22, 24 March 2021 (UTC)
- And one more "furthermore", ChiaWeiHo: it is unlikely that anything on the University website will be appropriate for a Wikipedia article about the University. Wikipedia is not for the university (or any other subject) to tell the world about itself: that is called promotion, and is forbidden. A Wikipedia article should be almost entirely based on what people who have no connection with the subject have chosen to publish about the subject, not on what the subject says or wants to say. --ColinFine (talk) 18:04, 24 March 2021 (UTC)

I am Matthew Berdyck and I have been targeted by Wikipedia editors for years
Hi,
I am not a Wikipedian. Please excuse me if I am posting this is the wrong place but I am at a loss at what to do about a situation that has been going on for many years.
I am a controversial filmmaker, activist, journalist and founder of ToxicWasteSites.org. In my career, I’ve faced a virtual media black out of my work in no less than a thousand communities. Even though, I’ve been suppressed, my name pops up in the media from time to time, which of course gets added to Wikipedia articles.
Every time someone enters my name into this site madness ensues. Editors start accusing me of self promotion - I certainly don’t need it - but as the person blowing the whistle on these scandals, often years ahead of the controversy, my name placed into these articles changes the timeline; if this timeline changes it has the effect of changing history and creating inaccurate articles. Furthermore, I’ve never made these edits, nor have I been an editor. It’s not me making the changes so it’s not self promotion.
Examples:
SPECIFIC ARTICLE —-> Warren County, Virginia - an editor claimed that the use of my name in the article and naming my organization was “promotional” and accused me of “aggressive self promotion.” Yet, the news article clearly credits both me and my .org for exposing the scandal. This is relevant because two years later, when it hit national media, my name was erased by the Washington Post and 400 other media outlets. In reality, the word “aggressive” was applied to two edits on the entire site, which I only noticed after the talk pages appeared in my search results.
SPECIFIC ARTICLE —-> Morris Operation - I spent close to $10,000 investigating and exposing the Morris Operation for my former newspaper. Once I created the article, someone came along and expanded the Wikipedia entry, adding a link to my media outlet. Later, an editor can be seen claiming my newspaper was “fake news.” They then took all of my research and sourcing that I worked to create, removed my newspaper link and resourced the article with the very sourcing I created in the first place.
Impersonation: In my career, I been the subject of intense public controversy, and subject to political retaliation. At one point, someone came here, posing as me, created a massive flame war with editors, which resulted in volumes of defamatory content being created; it readily entered my search results and I was left with years of SEO work to remove the bad links. At that time, an editor stated “The name Matthew Berdyck will never appear on Wikipedia” and since then, it never has, even when it’s included in places like ABC News, Yahoo News, Roanoke Times, Royal Examiner, and Creators.com.
I’m at a loss here. At no time have I ever used Wikipedia for self promotion, nor would I even benefit from it, nor would I even care, other than every time an editor targets my name, it creates negative search results that damage my career and in the interest of preserving history.
At least once a year, someone comes here and starts a flame war using my name even though I have no connection to this site. It seems like a few editors have been involved in this. I’ve noted that anyone who criticizes these people who stand up for my inclusion are immediately accused of “attacking” them and are banned.
I’m sorry for the drama but as Wikipedians, all of you should be aware of how corrosive it could be to a public figure’s life to be the subject of media suppression. For if the media says I do not exist, via suppression, then my life doesn’t exist.
I’m Shroedinger’s Matt.
I would like to know what I can do to stop these constant attacks against my name and somehow make peace with people I’ve literally never dealt with in my life. I have enough problems at it is, and dealing with Wikipedia drama is something I’m tired of having to deal with over and over again.

- Matt, we at the help desk cannot respond to such a general set of accusations. We can however tell you how to respond to each specific problem when it occurs. When you have an issue with any edit, respond on the talk page for the relevant article. If that fails, come here and tell us the name of the affected article, and we can try to tell you how to proceed. Although it is not mandatory, I suggest you create an account and use it. This makes uit a lot easier to communicate with you, and it is actually more private than editing without logging in. -Arch dude (talk) 01:53, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Why does it say wall of text with no examples? There’s two articles and distinct examples and those aren’t “walls of text.” I’d also like to point out these are very specific allegations.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.251.172.128 (talk) 02:00, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- IP, if the problem were that a person was being included in troublesome ways, we would have to move with urgency per the biography of living persons policy. What you're saying it seems is rather that a person is being left out. That makes it a run of the mill content dispute. What I would suggest you do is create an account (a static IP might do too) and declare your conflicts of interest as instructed at WP:DISCLOSE, and then make specific requests for changes to the article as instructed at WP:COIREQ. Then, when you encounter editors that disagree with your position, you enter dialog with them and follow the steps at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution until they are resolved. It may sound like a lot, I think it's doable taking it one step at a time. At any rate, that's the best advice I got. If you have specific editors who you think are acting in bad faith and deliberately trying to erase you out of spite, you could report them to WP:ANI, but you'd need some evidence backing up your allegations to take it up with the admins in that way. - You’re speaking Latin, to me. The evidence backing up my allegations can be found on the talk pages for the editors who are editing the articles. Also, I don’t learn of these things until they show up in my search results. By then, the damage is done. - It’s a precarious situation because in many instances, I’m the person who spent years and a lot of money conducting the original research that led to any given scandal and all of the resulting media that ends up creating an article. Because I’m so closely involved, I then get to sit back and watch careless journalists muck up the series of events. The end result is an article that is way off from history but is sourced. A good example is the “Aliso Canyon Gas Leak” article, next to the “Four Corners Methane Hot Spot” article. Both attempt to claim that they are the worst methane spills in US history, but only one of them is. This is because a certain activist, let’s call her Karen Schlockovich, was paid to go on TV and lie about Porter Ranch to generate lawsuit litigants. Yet, after fighting with a dozen national media outlets, to correct her false statements, they won’t, so now we have two worst gas leaks in US history, sourced by media. Reading Wikipedia makes me angry that people actually trust journalists and consider them to be credible when they should all be banned from reality. This is why I stay off of the site. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MatthewBerdyck (talk • contribs) 03:24, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel that way. Oddly enough, we are not interested in your reports of your research. Those are called "primary sources": See WP:OR. We are only interested in what independent reliable secondary sources say: See WP:RS. If you disagree with this philosophy, then indeed you should not use Wikipedia or associate yourself with it in any way. You should probably avoid using any encyclopedia or news source, either. - As I stated in my original post, this site, in relation to my work, does not exist other than interfering with my work and being used to create defamatory online content. In general, if I want to know the history of a pencil, I’ll read Wikipedia. Anything else more complex, like an event that has political overtones, nothing on this site is credible, especially if journalists are the source. My point from my post is someone needs to investigate my allegations and others need to leave me alone. I don’t want want anything to do with falsely rewriting history based on arbitrary rules about what is credible. — Preceding unsigned comment added by MatthewBerdyck (talk • contribs) 04:07, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

There is no scandal here, there is no madness. This probably concerns this edit (that lemonreport actually claims Berdyck is a violent and dangerous predator, so removing the link was a good idea), and these edits here. This, Draft:Summit Equipment & Supplies Superfund Site, seems to have been another attempt to use Wikipedia to generate some interest. But there was no scandal, no madness--just regular editing. No one was oppressed ("my name was erased by the Washington Post and 400 other media outlets"--well, even if that's true, it is not relevant here). Now-blocked involved accounts are Rightventracleleft (talk · contribs) and Welkinstan (talk · contribs). The last thing that Wikipedia needs is an invitation to this person to come and edit. - Confirming that The Trial of the Chicago 7 is duly listed in the article Producers Guild of America Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture#2020s (along with the other 9 nominees – it did not win), but that the nomination is not mentioned in the above-linked article about the film.
- Incidentally, the article Producers Guild of America itself seems to be a couple of years out of date by comparison to the '. . . Award for Best Theatrical Motion Picture' article (its several other awards do not have their own articles). It could do with the attention of a knowlegeable film buff (which I am decidedly not). {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.219.35.136 (talk) 14:18, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Unable to login and password reset email not receiving
Hi, After receiving several "please donate again" emails, I deceided to login at Wikipedia. I hadn't logged in for some time and wasn't sure about my username and password. There is always the reset button, so I filled in my current E-mail address and waited. I received no email though. Did I fill in the wrong email? That would be strange because te email that I recently received was addressed at [redacted] (it even stated that I "have been a donor since 2017 and had unlocked 3 badges (whatever that means)). Can you please help me retrieving my login?
My email = [redacted] I live in Sweden and in case that helps: there is only one john Benjamin Kerkhoven in this country.
All the best and keep up the good work,
John K. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.160.0.10 (talk) 09:01, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- The email you gave as donor can be different from your user account so you could try other email addresses. Many user accounts haven't given an email address. It's optional. If you forgot your password and cannot receive emails then you cannot gain access to the account even if you know the username. You can create a new account. If you have edited a page then you can click the "View history" tab to look for your username. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:35, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Order of Information in Infoboxes
Hope this is the right place to be asking. Tried finding an answer in the FAQ/MOS pages about them, couldn't find what I was looking for (not that I doubt it's there).
In an infobox describing a real person (in this case a politician), is there a particular sequence that should be followed in how things are laid out?
Should the positions held by a person more recently be put at the bottom? Should incumbent/current roles be placed higher, or is there a stricter date order?
Occo5903 (talk) 11:31, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- I don't know if there's an official policy, but the I suspect the answer would be to list positions in descending order of significance. That will usually, but not always, mean most recent first. For example William Howard Taft has his details as US President higher in the sidebar than those for Chief Justice, even though he held the latter post later in his life. People tend to be interested in Taft (if at all) as a President, so that's what comes first. If in doubt, though, revert to reverse chronological order. Chuntuk (talk) 15:25, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
BritAsia TV page
Hello, i am from BritAsia TV. Someone has created a britasia tv page with no relation to the company. I had contacted them through 'talk' however was unable to reach an understanding. Is there a way to get the page taken down or report the user?
Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Broadstreet158 (talk • contribs) 11:38, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Broadstreet158 This has been explained at User talk:Muhandes#BritAsia TV page. Companies don't get to control Wikipedia articles about them, as per WP:OWN, and you'll also need to make a WP:Paid editing disclosure before editing further. And stop trying to change an article about the Brit Asia TV Music Awards to be about the company, it's hijacking. Joseph2302 (talk) 11:45, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Broadstreet158 (edit conflict) A subject's permission is not required for there to be a Wikipedia article about them, as Wikipedia articles summarize what publicly available independent reliable sources say about the subject. As the user you asked told you, you have a clear conflict of interest, and are also a paid editor; you must make the formal declaration required by that policy, which is a Terms of Use requirement. If you have specific changes you would like to see, you may make a formal edit request on the article talk page, Talk:Brit Asia TV Music Awards. Note that the article will not necessarily say what you or your organization want it to say, as it is not yours to exclusively control. However, if there are errors, we want to know what they are along with any independent reliable sources to support them. 331dot (talk) 11:47, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Is there a checklist somewhere of how to assess a source for reliability?
Hi all
I'm looking for something and I'm not sure if it exists. Is there a checklist, flowchart or some other framework for assessing if a source is reliable? I know about Wikipedia:Reliable sources checklist but this is an essay and not policy. The reason I'm asking is I'd like to assess some Youtube channels to see if they're reliable sources, e.g Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee and The Daily Show (I don't want to get into a discussion here about if these specific sources are reliable, I'm just using them as examples). Whilst they use a satirical style they have teams of professional journalist researchers writing the stories. I've seen these used on Wikipedia as references before and others have flagged them as unreliable but without explaining why, having jokes alongside well referenced factual information doesn't seem like a good reason. Would it be possible to request sources are assessed by Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Perennial sources by starting an RFC?
Thanks
John Cummings (talk) 13:26, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- @John Cummings: I think a lot of it is the context of what you’re trying to source. If something is controversial and received coverage on one of those shows, that is a notable event and the coverage could be added on the subject’s article, in a “Popular culture” or similar section. As far as using something one of those shows says as a fact to source a related topic, that’s a little more challenging because some of those shows have satirical points of view to make points, and aren’t always meant to be taken as fact. So it depends on the context of what you’re trying to source. Sorry there’s no firmer guideline. TimTempleton (talk) (cont) 14:04, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Siege of Bunratty

hi I have been trying for ages to get my page Siege of Bunratty up I spent a long time writing that article and I can't see why it shouldn't be put up on wiki lately somebody deleted it saying I infringed copyright because I wrote the same article on politics.ie how can I infringe something i wrote myself? can someone please help as I have tried several times to use different pages to apply for help on getting that article put up thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stephen Blackpool (talk • contribs) 14:47, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hi Stephen Blackpool. I note that your request to undelete the article has been refused, so I can't look at it. There are two obvious problems. First, the politics.ie article was credited to "galteeman" and there is no simple way of confirming that you wrote it. More importantly, the article there has no sources, so will be an instant fail here: there have to be reliable, WP:SECONDARY sources confirming this was a notable event. So my advice would be to find those sources and re-draft a very short article giving the basic information about the siege using different wording to that used before. Once accepted, the article can be expanded in the usual way. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:11, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Hello, Stephen Blackpool. The answer is that https://politics.ie says at the bottom "© Politics.ie. All rights reserved". So as far as Wikipedia is concerned, everything on it is copyright, and may not be used anywhere in Wikipedia (apart from short attributed quotations). If you indeed hold the copyright to some material published there, then you have the power to license it in a way that Wikipedia will accept; but you need to do that explicitly, by going through the procedure in donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 15:17, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- Actually, ColinFine the T&C on the website say "Members retain the copyright to their original content. However, all members, by posting on this forum, agree that they have conveyed a license in perpetuity to Politics.ie to display that content here on this forum. but I still think that's not relevant to creating a decent draft for Wikipedia. Kano Brand Page Deleted - Need Help

Hi, User:86.4.137.31, and thank you for your question. First, I want to make it clear that Wikipedia is not for advertising, but to inform. This page may have been deleted because it may have not passed a notability assessment. If you want to get this page back, I suggest going to Wikipedia:Refund and asking the people there. Dswitz10734 (talk) 15:00, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- You may want to look again a the deletion discussion at WP:Articles_for_deletion/Log/2020_April_17#Kano_(company). There's not much point in re-starting an article based on that one, I believe. You could try a totally new draft if you can find about four reliable, WP:SECONDARY sources to show the company is (now) notable in Wikipedia's somewhat strict sense. If you put these sources here, Teahouse hosts will soon advise if they think a new article is now viable. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:28, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
- take a look at WP:CSMN prior to your search for source to support notability, to see how easy it is to mess this up. -Arch dude (talk) 16:01, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Page help
Dear Wikipedia Help:
I am a professor at Northeastern University in Boston, MA. As part of a class I teach, I have an assignment where the students have to edit a wikipedia page. Last semester, one of the students in the class (unbeknownst to me) created a wikipedia page for me at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tina_Eliassi-Rad.
I noticed that a Russian organization (which I did an interview with in 2018) is using a frame of that video as my photo and promoting their organization. In particular the caption makes it sound like I am affiliated with that organization, which I am not. I have removed that photo and would like to make sure that it is not added again.
I am also not sure that I should have a Wikipedia page. But I will leave that to you to decide.
Sincerely, Tina Eliassi-Rad Professor Northeastern University — Preceding unsigned comment added by TinaEliassi (talk • contribs) 15:12, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
Hi @TinaEliassi, and thanks for reaching out! About the promotion of the organization, advertising is not welcome here on Wikipedia, we'll make short work of the ad and it will be down within the week. We don't take kindly to organizations using our encyclopedia to promote themselves. Thank you for reporting this. About your personal article, I can nominate it for deletion and then other editors will share their opinion about if this page should be deleted. First, we'll have to examine the criteria over at WP:Notability. If this is a personal matter and you feel uncomfortable about having an article, I can mention that and that may expedite the deletion of this article, if that's what you want. I hope to hear fom you soon, Dswitz10734 (talk) 15:19, 25 March 2021 (UTC)

Hello, I am an old/returning editor who last logged in around 2016. I was wondering if it was okay if I started over with a new username, but with my rollbacker rights still in tact. I wanted to see what my options are as far as that goes. --Kanashimi Hyoketsu 16:51, 25 March 2021 (UTC)
