Late 16th century borrowing from New Latin glōttis, from Ancient Greek γλωττῐ́ς (glōttís, “mouth of the windpipe”), from γλῶττᾰ (glôtta, “tongue”) + -ῐς (-is, feminine noun suffix). Cognates include Latin gula.
