DOCENTES ENCARGADOS
En esta sociedad de movilidad de culturas y acceso al conocimiento, los idiomas extranjeros se convierten en una herramienta primordial
para construir una representación del mundo; en un instrumento básico para la construcción de conocimiento, para llevar a cabo
aprendizajes, para el manejo óptimo de las nuevas tecnologías y para el logro de una plena integración social y cultural. Así mismo, y
como consecuencia del papel que desempeña en la construcción del conocimiento, el lenguaje está estrechamente vinculado a los
procesos de pensamiento y al dominio de habilidades no estrictamente lingüísticas como, por ejemplo, las habilidades cognitivas, las
habilidades motrices o las habilidades relativas a la planificación y control de la propia actividad de aprendizaje.
Ser capaz de utilizar un idioma extranjero para comunicarse con los hablantes cuya lengua sea distinta de la propia y para entender
textos orales y escritos, incrementa la confianza del alumno en sí mismo en sus posibilidades para superar obstáculos y para sacar el
máximo provecho de sus conocimientos. Además, el dominio de un idioma extranjero amplía considerablemente el horizonte intelectual
que supone el hecho de acceder a los aspectos culturales, científicos y tecnológicos que se comunican a través de una lengua extranjera.
Lingüistas como Cummins (1984), Hakuta y Díaz (1984, 1986) y Oller (1981), plantean los beneficios del conocimiento de una segunda
lengua, luego de haber alcanzado cierto avance cognoscitivo en una primera lengua, por cuanto el individuo desarrolla un mayor grado
de conciencia metalingüística y un incremento de la habilidad para apreciar lo arbitrario y lo convencional de los símbolos lingüísticos.
Cuando los alumnos empiezan el aprendizaje de una lengua extranjera en los primeros años de la educación formal, posee ya alguna
competencia comunicativa en su lengua materna.
De lo que se trata, por tanto, en un currículo de idiomas extranjeros, es de promover esta competencia para comunicarse en otras
lenguas, dentro de sus propias limitaciones, tal como ya lo saben hacer en su lengua materna. El propósito fundamental es lograr que
adquieran y desarrollen su competencia en ese código de tal manera que utilicen el idioma extranjero para relacionar saberes, para
comprender e interpretar la realidad circundante y para compartir ¡deas, sentimientos y opiniones en situaciones de comunicación en
las que rigen unas pautas de comportamiento lingüístico y social propias de las culturas donde se habla el idioma extranjero. El bagaje
de conocimientos y las creencias personales llevan a los usuarios de un bagaje de conocimientos y las creencias personales llevan a
