Subject and verb
La concordancia entre el sujeto y el verbo es un aspecto importante a tratar con los niños ya
que desde pequeños es importante enseñarles a elaborar frases que tengan concordancia.
A la hora de escribir es necesario que exista concordancia entre el sujeto y el verbo. Por regla general, si
el sujeto es singular el verbo va en singular; si el sujeto es plural el verbo va en plural.
Examples:
He doesn't go to work by train. Él no va al trabajo en tren.
They have studied together. Ellos han estudiado juntos.
Sin embargo hay que tener en cuenta los siguientes casos:
Con un nombre colectivo, el verbo
My family is very happy. Mi familia es
va en singular si se considera al
muy feliz.
grupo como un todo, y va en plural si
The football team are training now. El

Adjectives
Iniciemos ahora el estudio de los adjetivos centrándonos en sus características, posición dentro
de la oración y algunos usos especiales con el artículo determinado the:
a. Characteristics:
Los adjetivos no tienen número, es decir, no tienen una forma de plural, a excepción de
los adjetivos demostrativos: this these; that those. Observa:
Example:
That boy is tall but those girls are short. Ese chico es alto pero esas chicas son bajas.
Los adjetivos tampoco tienen género, es decir tienen una única forma para el masculino,
femenino y neutro, a excepción del adjetivo posesivo de 3ª persona del singular, cuyas formas
son his para el masculino, her para el femenino e its para el neutro. Observa estos ejemplos:
Example:
I bought a laptop; I use it a lot. Compré un ordenador portátil; lo uso mucho
En ocasiones, un nombre que se coloca delante de otro nombre adquiere las características de
un adjetivo. Observa estos ejemplos:
Examples:
I found a fivepound note on my bed. Encontré un billete de cinco libras encima de mi cama
There were a lot of lemon trees in that street. Había muchos limoneros en esa calle
b. Position:
La mayoría de los adjetivos se colocan delante del nombre al que describen, o del que
dicen algo. En este caso se llaman atributivos o adjetivos usados atributivamente.
Observa este ejemplo:
Examples:
https://aulavirtual.castillalamancha.es/Curso_1617/blocks/recopila/view.php?id=80933 12/43
1/11/2016 eXe
She's lost a colourful sweater. Ella ha perdido un jersey de colores
I bought a comfortable sofa. Yo compré un sofá cómodo
Los adjetivos van detrás de los verbos copulativos o linking verbs. En este caso, se trata de
adjetivos predicativos o adjetivos usados predicativamente. Entre estos verbos tenemos los
siguientes:
Algunos adjetivos sólo se usan detrás del verbo to be como glad, afraid y awake. Observa
estos ejemplos:
Examples:
She's glad to be here. Ella está contenta de estar aquí
I'm afraid of darkness. Yo tengo miedo de la oscuridad
He's not awake yet. Él no está despierto todavía.
Algunos adjetivos van detrás de how en preguntas sobre medidas y distancias, y detrás de las
medidas o distancias en las respuestas. Observa estos ejemplos:
Examples:
"How long is a tennis court?" "It's twentyfour metres long." ¿Cuánto mide una pista de
tenis? Mide veinticuatro metros de largo
"How deep is the river?" "It's two metres deep." ¿Qué profundidad tiene el río? Tiene una
profundidad de dos metros
En este sentido hay que conocer cuáles son los nombres correspondientes a estos adjetivos
(long, deep, wide y high):
long : length
deep:depth
wide :width
high: height
Por ello, las cuatro preguntas de los ejemplos anteriores podrían también plantearse así:
Ejemplos:
"What's the length of a tennis court?" ¿Cuál es la longitud de una pista de tenis?
"What's the depth of the river?" ¿Cuál es la profundidad del río?
https://aulavirtual.castillalamancha.es/Curso_1617/blocks/recopila/view.php?id=80933 13/43
1/11/2016 eXe
Otros adjetivos que van detrás de how en preguntas serían los siguientes:
Examples:
"How tall are you?" "¿Cuánto mides tú?"
"How busy is he?" "¿Cómo está él de ocupado?"
"How far do you live?" "¿A qué distancia vives?"
c. Definite article the:
El artículo determinado the seguido por algunos adjetivos se puede usar para referirse a
un grupo de gente. Se usa esta construcción en sentido plural. Estudia estos ejemplos:
Examples:
I collected money for the poor. Recogí dinero para los pobres
The rich often live here. Los ricos a menudo viven aquí
Además, si va seguido de un adjetivo de nacionalidad puede utilizarse para referirse a los
ciudadanos de ese país en sentido plural.
Example:
The Irish come to Spain in summer. Los irlandeses vienen a España en verano
Algunos adjetivos de nacionalidad han de usar la forma de plural con s. Observa:
Examples:
The Italians are kind. Los italianos son agradables.
Otros adjetivos de nacionalidad con este uso serían the Americans, the Russians o the
Germans.
