SIFAT OPTIK KRISTAL SUMBU 1
Indicatrix
o Imaginary figure, but very useful; shows/defines:
• Optic axis
• Positive and negative minerals
• Relationship to crystallographic axes
o Three type – each with characteristic shape:
• Isotropic
• Uniaxial (anisotropic)
• Biaxial (anisotropic)
o Primary use is to determine refractive index (n) and
vibration directions of slow and fast rays
INDIKATRIKS
Adalah gambar geometri tiga dimensi yang
menunjukkan variasi indeks bias dari kristal yang
merupakan arah gelombang cahaya bergetar
(vektor) yang berjumlah tak terhingga dan
dilukiskan seolah-olah berpencar dari satu titik
pusat dalam kristal, sehingga permukaan yang
menghubungkan ujung-ujung vektor tersebut
akan membentuk suatu bidang bola

• mempunyai satu harga indeks bias (n)
• Nilai n pada setiap arah sama (kristal
dengan sistem isometrik, gelas)

Isotropic crystal system
• The chemical bonds is same in all directions

• Only one index of refraction necessary to describe how
light travels through crystal
• Mempunyai satu harga indeks bias (n)

• Nilai n pada setiap arah sama (kristal dengan
sistem isometriks, gelas)
• Tidak akan merubah arah sinar polarisasi
yang melalui bidang kristalnya, sehingga pada
kondisi nicol bersilang akan tetap gelap
keadaannya
• Cahaya yang melalui kristal di absorbsi oleh
polar bagian atas
KRISTAL ANISOTROP
• Kristal anisotrop sumbu 1 dan
sumbu 2 baik yang positif
maupun yang negatif
mempunyai lebih dari satu
harga n
• Kristal sumbu 1 mempunyai 2
harga n ekstrim: nω (n ordiner)
dan nε (n ekstraordiner)
• Kristal sumbu 2 mempunyai 3
harga n ekstrim: nx, ny dan nz
• Bentuk indikatriknya akan
merupakan sebuah elipsoida
Uniaxial crystal systems
• Chemical bonds are different in other directions, light traveling in other

directions is split into two rays
• A second index of refraction is required to fully describe how light travels
through the crystal
• Chemical bonds are the same in the {001}/{0001} plane, light vibrating on
this plane is not split into two rays
• Light vibrating on this plane travels perpendicular to the plane, along the c
axis, only one index of refraction necessary to describe how light travels in
this direction
• The c axis is the optic axis
• Uniaxial mineral example : Quartz; Calcite, Dolomite; Tourmaline;
Nepheline; Leucite; Apatite; Zircon
