Recently, Tom Homan, Donald Trump's anointed border and immigration czar, told Pope Francis to mind his own business and, generally, to go pound sand. I was churlish, ignorant, and shocking, but hardly surprising, coming from MAGA land.

A brave statement, deserving of our thanks and accolades, would have been a no vote from Tillis against the confirmations of inexperienced, unqualified and inappropriate nominees like Pete Hegseth, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Kristi Noem and Kash Patel. Then I would have picked up the phone to congratulate him for his rational thinking.

Public officials have a duty to base their decisions on merit, character and qualifications — not fear or coercion. If these threats influenced Tillis’s stance, that is an issue of national concern. If the threats were exaggerated or misrepresented, that raises entirely different but equally serious questions about the integrity of our elected officials. Either scenario is unacceptable.

A sincere thank-you to Scott Sexton for the "Mounting legal woes" article (Feb. 13) discussing the latest developments regarding the candidacy and election of Edward Jones as a member of the Forsyth County Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors.

Does any one of you remember voting for Elon Musk? I hope not, because his name never appeared on a ballot. He was not vetted in any way or subjected to the limited "scrutiny" that the current Cabinet appointees have faced. He was appointed to a "position" that doesn't exist and has proceeded to act with impunity.

The president’s remarks concerning the tragic crash in Washington started off well: a moment of silence, condolences for the victims and families, but then we found out that somehow, this could be blamed on Obama, Biden and/or Pete Buttigieg. Vintage Trump!
