This often neglected European tourist destination has lots to offer. Its perfect location at the mouth of two large rivers has always drawn not only those in pursuit of a better life, but an incredible number of conquerors as well. This is the city over which the highest number of battles seem to have been fought in the history of mankind and the city with the largest number of names given by all manner of invaders. Though the city has been destroyed and rebuilt over and over again, leaving the impression that there seems to be no end to this vicious circle, today Belgrade is the city of many hidden gems and apparently one of the best nightlife experiences in Europe.
Belgrade so far seems to have been unjustly neglected by international tourists. It is located at the mouth of two great European rivers: the Danube and the Sava which offered refuge even for the first inhabitants of the European continent. This area was continuously inhabited for an incredible period of seven thousand years. For such a long history one would expect to find exceptionally old buildings and monuments that stand in silent testimony of these ancient times. Yet, both fortune and ill fate of Belgrade is in its location. This city has been targeted by all manner of ancient and modern conquerors that didn’t seem to have left Belgrade out of their grandiose plans. Therefore, Belgrade is the city for which the largest number of battles have been fought in the history of mankind. No, Belgrade has no ancient monuments to record its potted history, just the people that remember and still greet foreigners with smiles and hospitality. There is a high number of museums in Belgrade that collect and record the heritage of this great city, but also a high number of art galleries that aren’t even spacious enough to exhibit their entire collections. Belgrade has also positioned itself at the forefront of the region and Europe as a whole when it comes to nightlife experience. There seems to be an incredible number of cafes, restaurants and clubs (both on the river banks as well as in the city), offering a number of locations to go out that don’t seem to be readily available in other tourist locations. Whatever you might have thought you know about Belgrade so far, brace yourself up for a surprise, for you will be dazed by this ‘old-new’ city and you are certainly most likely to come back to.
