Pokémon world locations |
Mt. Silver Cave (Japanese: シロガネやまどうくつ Mt. Shirogane Cave) is the cave system of Mt. Silver in Johto, located west of Victory Road and Indigo Plateau. It can be entered from the outside area at the foot of the mountain after receiving the sixteen Gym Badges of both Johto and Kanto. In Generation II, both the outside area and the cave system are included under the location header Silver Cave (Japanese: シロガネやま Mt. Shirogane).
At the very summit, the player may battle Red. If defeated, Red vanishes from Mt. Silver Cave, and returns every time the player enters the Hall of Fame.
A field based on Silver Cave also appears in Pokémon Stadium 2's Kanto Gym Leader Castle.
Geography
In the games, Mt. Silver is off-limits to all but the most skilled of Trainers. After the player has received all sixteen badges of Johto and Kanto, Professor Oak will give the player permission to travel here.
There is a Pokémon Center just outside the entrance of Mt. Silver Cave, at the foot of Mt. Silver. Inside, however, the cave is dark, requiring Flash to see in the first room. Many high-level Pokémon reside in the cave, as well as rare Pokémon not found elsewhere in the Johto region, like Larvitar and Misdreavus.
The cave has only one entrance, unlike all other caves found in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, but goes deep into the mountain. In the cave's final room, the player will encounter Red, who will wordlessly challenge the player to what is the highest-leveled Trainer battle in the Pokémon series. If defeated, Red will vanish, and will only return for another battle after the player defeats the Elite Four again.
In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, Mt. Silver Cave is much larger than before. Flash is no longer needed to light up the cave. The higher sections of the cave, where Red is located, require Rock Climb to be accessible. At times, the player must also venture onto the slopes on the mountain's sides in order to climb higher. In addition, a heavy snowfall is present at the summit, which assumes the hail weather condition in battle; this weather becomes diamond dust on certain days, which disables the hail weather condition in battle.

Trivia
- Defeating Red at this location causes the credits to roll. In Generation II, progress is not saved and the player returns to the Pokémon Center outside Mt. Silver. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, progress is saved and the player returns to their home in New Bark Town.
- Red's Pikachu, who can be fought here at level 88 in HeartGold and SoulSilver, is the highest-leveled Pokémon of any in-game Trainer not in a battle facility in the core series, tied with Cynthia's Garchomp in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl.
- Like Snowpoint City, Mt. Silver's summit features diamond dust on certain special days in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, including the anniversary of the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver in Japan.
- Mt. Silver is also the only location in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver where a naturally occurring hailstorm can be experienced.
- In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, whenever the player is in or on the mountain, the location header pop-up is always "Mt. Silver Cave", even when the player is not inside the cave. This may possibly be a carryover from the original games, in which the in-game location header was "Silver Cave".
- Fresh Water is collected from Mt. Silver, according to the Japanese item description in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, and Pokémon Stadium 2. This is also mentioned in the Korean item description in Pokémon Gold and Silver. However, this is not mentioned in the English item descriptions.
