Coal fragments are ore fragments mined from the boulder in the Volcanic Mine. Level 50 Mining is required to receive these fragments, granting 25 points and 30 Mining experience per fragment.
They are automatically given to Petrified Pete upon exiting the mine without teleporting in exchange for Mining experience.
