A white candle is a Firemaking item which can be lit with a tinderbox to create a white candle (lit). There is also a black candle used during Merlin's Crystal, obtained from the Candle-maker in Catherby.

A lit candle is a basic light source, and at least 3 lit candles must be carried in the inventory for maximum brightness (although 1 would be sufficient to prevent any "skittering insects" from attacking). Lit candles stay lit normally, but can be put out by the "Extinguish" or "Drop" option, or inadvertently by slipping on a stepping stone and falling into water, or swamp gas explosions.

Players who enter the Lumbridge Swamp Caves with candles should be careful, as they will ignite swamp gas in two areas in the caves: a northwestern area, just north of the Lumbridge Swamp entrance, and a semi-enclosed patch in the south (identifiable by scorch marks on the ground and white smoke coming from walls, black patches on the minimap; blue gas vents in the rest of the cave are perfectly safe).

The explosion will extinguish all lit candles, deal damage equal to about 11%–20% of players' maximum life points (taking less percentage damage at higher levels), and leave them at the mercy of whatever lurks in the dark until the candle is relit. Players receive the warning "Your candle flares brightly!" and have a few seconds to put it out before damage is taken, but they are prevented from putting it out or dropping it (which automatically puts it out if done in a dark area) themselves if they do not have any other light source.

One can put a candle in an empty candle lantern to prevent this from happening. As the two areas contains little of interest, players can opt to take other paths to reach the eastern parts of the caves instead; the southern patch is small enough such that players could simply run across during the warning period without the gas exploding.

Candles need to be extinguished before they can be traded or sold.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Clicking on the option to buy 4 candles from any store will result in the purchase of a fork handle and will deplete the stock by 4 candles. It is a play on words, as "fork handle" and "four candle" sound similar. This is a reference to a classic UK TV comedy sketch from "The Two Ronnies".
