Treasure Trails is a members-only Distraction and Diversion in which players follow a series of clues leading towards buried treasure. A Treasure Trail is started by finding a sealed clue scroll, which may be dropped by killing various monsters or obtained through skilling activities.
There are five difficulties of clue scrolls: easy, medium, hard, elite, and master. Only one of each type of sealed clue scroll can be open at a time. Opening a sealed clue scroll if a player already owns an open one isn't possible.
After completing a Treasure Trail, messages comes up in the chat box indicating how many Treasure Trails have been completed of that difficulty, and how many Treasure Trail Points have been obtained.
Mechanics[edit | edit source]
Obtaining[edit | edit source]
A Treasure Trail is started by finding a sealed clue scroll. They may be obtained as a drop from various monsters; while pickpocketing; from a treasure chest decoration in an aquarium; purchased with thaler or Treasure Trail Points; from the Prosper perk; training gathering skills; or collecting catalysts of alteration.
As monster drops, clue scrolls are always considered a "tertiary" (bonus) drop. When received, a loot beam will always appear and a game message will tell the player of the drop. As skilling drops, clue scrolls can be obtained at random and a game message will inform the player whenever they obtain one. The chances of receiving a clue scroll increase with the appropriate tier luck enhancer. The Treasure Trail information board can be used to stop receiving loot beams and stop receiving loot beams for each difficulty of clue scroll.
Skills that can yield clues are Archaeology (1/5,000 chance), Divination (1/2,500 chance), Fishing (1/3,000 chance), Mining (1/2,250 chance), and Woodcutting (1/3,000 chance). The tier of clue scroll players receive is weighted based on the level of the activity, with elites appearing at level 60 training methods and above.
Level of activity | Clue scrolls obtainable |
---|---|
0–49 | Easy (70/100), medium (30/100) |
50–59 | Easy (50/100), medium (40/100), hard (10/100) |
60–69 | Easy (40/100), medium (30/100), hard (20/100), elite (10/100) |
70–79 | Easy (20/100), medium (30/100), hard (30/100), elite (20/100) |
80–89 | Medium (20/200), hard (50/100), elite (30/100) |
90+ | Hard (60/100), elite (40/100) |
There is always a 1% chance for a sealed elite clue to upgrade to a sealed master clue, which can be upgraded to a 2% chance if using the Invention perk Prosper.
Players can collect up to 25 clue scrolls of each type of difficulty below master (master clues are unlimited), subject to a soft cap. The caps count both sealed and active clue scrolls. This soft cap can be partially bypassed, such as guaranteed or item holding services. Once the player hits the soft cap however, players cannot obtain any more clue scrolls, outside of guaranteed sources.
The cap can be removed by purchasing the upgrade at the Treasure Trails Reward Shop with 750 Treasure Trail Points. Charos' clue carrier can be used to automatically store any sealed clue scrolls and reward caskets that are received.
Difficulty[edit | edit source]

There are five levels of clue scrolls: easy, medium, hard, elite, and master. Higher difficulty clue scrolls are more difficult to obtain and have higher requirements to complete, but offer greater rewards. All clue scrolls except easy clue scrolls can be downgraded to next lowest difficulty tier by speaking to Zaida.
The difficulty of the treasure trail affects the type of puzzles that can be received as well as the total number of clues that must be completed to solve the trail:
- Easy trails are 3–5 clues long
- Medium trails clues are 4–6 clues long
- Hard trails are 5–7 clues long
- Elite trails are 5–7 clues long
- Master trails are 6–8 clues long
Some clues require the completion of puzzle boxes and challenge scrolls; these do not count as clue steps.
Trails that contain more clues and require a longer period of time to complete do not necessarily guarantee the chances of a more valuable prize. The prize obtained is determined when the casket is obtained at the end of the trail and is not affected by the length of the clue trail.
If you have the Totem of Treasure activated, the length to finish a clue is reduced by one step.
Treasure Trail Points[edit | edit source]
Completing a treasure trail awards a number of Treasure Trail Points dependent on the difficulty of the clue. These can be spent at the Treasure Trails Reward Shop, south-west of the Grand Exchange in Varrock. Rewards include the globetrotter outfit and various unlocks beneficial to players solving treasure trails; clue scrolls; and clue reroll tokens and skipping tickets.
Clue guides[edit | edit source]
A guide for all possible clues for each Treasure Trail difficulty can be found below.
Types of clues[edit | edit source]
The difficulty of the treasure trail affects which types of clue are received.
There are 9 different types of clues that may be encountered during treasure trails that count as a step towards completing the trail.

Some types of clue also require completion of a secondary puzzle. This does not count as an additional step towards treasure trail progress.
- Challenge scrolls may be received during medium and hard anagram clues and on medium simple clues. They involve answering a question given by an NPC.
- Puzzle boxes may be received during hard anagram and cryptic clues and on elite compass and scan clues. They involve rearranging a scrambled picture made up of sliding tiles into the correct formation. They may be skipped by using a puzzle box skipping ticket.
- Celtic knots may be received during elite compass and scan clues. They involve rotating overlapping rings with symbols of runes on them so that the rune symbols on overlapping points of the ring are matching. They may be skipped by using a knot skipping ticket.
- Lockboxes may be received during master anagram, compass, and scan clues. They involve flipping the tiles in a 5 × 5 grid so that all tiles show the same icon. Flipping a tile also flips the other tiles surrounding it. They may be skipped by using a lockbox skipping ticket.
- Towers may be received during master anagram, compass, and scan clues. They involve placing the numbers 1-5 in each square of a 5 × 5 grid so that each row and column contains each number between 1-5. Numbers around the edge of the grid tell you how many towers would be visible from that point, with taller towers obstructing the view of smaller towers behind them. They may be skipped by using a tower skipping ticket.

Anagrams[edit | edit source]
Anagrams involve rearranging a string of letters into another word or phrase (for example, "listen" is an anagram of "silent"). The solution of an anagram is always the name of an NPC. Once the solution is found, the player can get their next clue by talking to that NPC.
They may appear in medium, hard, and master clues. A challenge scroll may be given during a medium or hard anagram. A puzzle box may need to be completed during a hard anagram. During a master anagram a lockbox or towers puzzle maybe be given. These may be skipped by using the relevant puzzle skipping ticket. Solve the puzzle box and talk to the NPC again, or tell the NPC the answer to the challenge scroll, to receive the next clue.
When determining a medium clue, there is a 19/99 chance for it to be an anagram clue, a 10/109 chance for hard clues, and a 25/100 chance for master clues.[1]
- Compass

Compass clues display an arrow that points in the direction of a spot that the player must locate. The arrow only shows the direction of the required location and not the distance to it. When the player is standing at the correct location, the compass's arrow will change to an 'X' symbol and the player can dig to receive their next clue or casket. They can dig by clicking on the spade icon under the 'X' symbol on the clue, by clicking on a spade in the inventory, or by right-clicking the clue scroll and selecting the "Dig" option if there is a spade on the tool belt.
Compass clues can be found on elite and master Treasure Trails. Master clue scrolls will only ever contain compass clues in The Arc; all other locations are found only in elite clues. Digging may spawn a Guthix wizard on elite clues or a cabbagemancer for master clues. Players can avoid this by using a meerkat familiar's fetch casket special move to retrieve the next clue or casket.
Additionally there is a chance that you will have to solve a puzzle box or celtic knot puzzle to progress an elite compass clue. On master Treasure Trails there is a chance of receiving a lockbox or towers puzzle. These may be skipped by using the relevant puzzle skipping ticket.
When determining an elite trail clue, there is a 482/1059 chance for it to be a compass clue, and a 10/100 chance during master clues.[2]
Coordinates[edit | edit source]

Coordinate clues give a set of coordinates which indicate an exact location somewhere on the surface world. They are presented in the following format:
- 00 degrees 00 minutes north/south
00 degrees 00 minutes east/west
Locate the spot and dig at it to continue the clue scroll. Coordinate clues can only be found on medium and hard treasure trails.
When digging at the correct spot for a hard clue scroll a Zamorak or a Saradomin wizard may be spawned. This enemy must be defeated before digging again and continuing the clue scroll. The wizards have no weakness so any combat style can be used to dispatch them effectively. Saradomin wizards will only appear in non-Wilderness areas; Zamorak wizards appear only in Wilderness areas. Alternatively, using the fetch casket ability with meerkats will not trigger the wizard's appearance, and the clue will instantly progress.
When determining a medium trail clue, there is a 20/99 chance for it to be a coordinate clue, and for hard clue this chance is 25/109.[3]
To solve a coordinate clue manually, a chart, sextant, and watch are required to measure exact coordinates. All of these items can be placed on the tool belt and do not need to be in the player's inventory. If the sextant is in the player's tool belt, the current geolocation can be obtained by right clicking the clue scroll and selecting the sextant option. Meerkats can also be used to provide sextant coordinates upon interaction.
One game tile is exactly 1.875 minutes. With sixty minutes in a degree, each degree is equivalent to thirty-two squares. The location 00º00' north/south, 00º00' east/west points to the Observatory.

Cryptics[edit | edit source]
Cryptic clues involve solving a riddle that directs you to talk to an NPC, search a piece of scenery (such as a crate or bookshelf), or dig at a particular location. They feature in easy, medium, and hard clue scrolls.
When doing medium clue scrolls some of the cryptic clues require you kill a nearby monster to obtain a key to unlock the scenery before it can be searched. Keys do not need to be obtained after unlocking the "way of the foot-shaped key" reward from the Treasure Trails Reward Shop for 500 Treasure Trail Points. Instead, the location is always unlocked.
When doing hard clue scrolls some of the cryptic clues that involve speaking to an NPC will require you to solve a puzzle box before talking to the NPC again to complete the clue. A guide on solving puzzle boxes can be found here. Alternatively, a puzzle box skipping ticket can be used to complete the puzzle box.
When determining an easy trail clue, there is a 25/99 chance for it to be a cryptic clue, for medium clue this chance is 20/99, and for hard clue 24/109.[4]
Emote clues[edit | edit source]
Emote clues involve equipping certain items in a particular location and performing an emote. Once the emote has been performed, an NPC called Uri will appear give the player a scroll box or casket. The items required for emote clues can be stored in and retrieved from hidey-holes located in the areas where the emotes must be performed. A full globetrotter outfit acts as the required emote clue outfit if the corresponding hidey-hole has been filled. Alternatively, costume skipping tickets can be used to complete a clue without having the required items equipped (the ticket must be activated, then perform the required emote to complete the clue). Globetrotter shorts may be activated using their right-click option to signal Uri without having to perform the correct emote, though without the full outfit, players will still need to have the items equipped.
These types of clues are featured in easy, medium, hard, and master clue scrolls. On medium trails, players must perform two emotes; one to summon Uri, and then the second before talking to him to progress further in the trail. On hard and master trails, a double agent will spawn when the emote is attempted, who will attack the player with melee. The double agent is level 77 in the Wilderness and 98 outside for hard clues, or 112 for master clues.
When determining an easy trail clue, there is a 25/99 chance for it to be a emote clue. For medium clue this chance is 20/99, for hard 25/109, and for master 25/100.[5]
Maps[edit | edit source]
Map clues are rough pictures of a location. If the map is marked with an X, you need to take a spade to the place indicated on the map and dig there. A "dig" option can be found by right-clicking the clue; there is no need to bring a spade. Digging on any game square in the three-by-three area centred around the marked square will complete the clue. If the map leads to a crate, it must be searched until the next clue or the reward is found.
Maps are found in easy, medium, and hard clue scrolls. When completing a hard map clue there is a chance that a Saradomin wizard, or Zamorak wizard if in the Wilderness, will appear and attack the player. The wizard must be defeated to continue the clue. A meerkats familiar's fetch casket special move can be used to complete a map clue with no chance of spawning a wizard.
When determining an easy trail clue, there is a 25/99 chance for it to be a map clue, for medium clue this chance is 20/99, and for hard 25/109.[6]
Scans[edit | edit source]

Scan clues are a type of clue that can appear during elite and master clue scrolls. To start the clue, you must first right-click the scroll and select the "Read" option to find out which region to search. After travelling there, open the scroll's "Scan" interface to automatically scan the region for the correct spot. Upon starting the scan, a pulse effect appears around you, continually emitting pulses with audible feedback. When on the correct spot dig to obtain the next clue dig to obtain the next clue.
On elite clues there is a chance that a Guthix wizard will spawn and attack the player when digging. On master clues there is a chance that a cabbagemancer, bandosian wild mage, or armadylean shaman may spawn. The wizard must be defeated before continuing the clue. No wizard will spawn if using the meerkats' fetch casket scroll to dig. Meerkats also provide the benefit of increasing the range scanned by the clue by +5 paces.
Additionally there is a chance that you will have to solve a puzzle box or celtic knot puzzle to progress an elite scan clue. On master Treasure Trails there is a chance of receiving a lockbox or towers puzzle. These may be skipped by using the relevant puzzle skipping ticket.
They can be distinguished from other types of clues by the magnifying glass attached to the clue scroll. When determining an elite trail clue, there is a 577/1059 chance for it to be a scan clue; for master clues, this chance is 20/100.[7]
Simple clues[edit | edit source]
Simple clues tell you exactly what you need to do: either talk to someone or search a location They are only found on easy and medium clue scrolls. Some medium simple clues require completion of a challenge scroll to progress. When determining an easy trail clue, there is a 24/99 chance for it to be a simple clue.[8]
Skill riddle challenges[edit | edit source]
Skill riddle challenges are logical problems that appear in master clues. The clues always begin with "Complete the action to solve the clue" and require players to complete a skill-based action somewhere in the world. The requirements to complete the actions may be boosted if the player does not have a sufficient level to complete the task; however the Assist System cannot be used. Once the problem has been solved, the clue scroll will transform into another clue scroll or a casket.
When determining a master trail clue, there is a 20/100 chance for it to be a skill riddle clue.[9]
Hidey-holes[edit | edit source]

Hidey-holes are storage units used to store items used in emote clues. They can be filled with items corresponding to relevant emote clues. The materials and level required to convert these inconspicuous objects into hidey-holes depend on the tier of clue scroll they relate to.
Players can see which hidey-holes they have built or filled using the Treasure Trail information board near Zaida, or via "Hidey-hole locations" option on the Treasure Trail collection log.
Rewards[edit | edit source]

Players receive various rewards when they complete a clue. The rewards are randomly picked, and usually three or more different rewards are given in return. Players automatically receive the rewards when they talk to someone (e.g. by completing a puzzle box). Otherwise, they will get a casket instead, which contains their rewards. In elite and master trails, players may need to solve a puzzle before the casket can be claimed.
Caskets can be stacked and do not count towards the soft cap on scrolls. This means a player can hold as many caskets of any tier they wish.
Players may reroll their rewards if they are unsatisfactory, but they must complete three of the same difficulty of clues to reroll their rewards, and they can only hold up to three rerolls at a time, though owning four pieces of the globetrotter outfit can allow players to store five of these rerolls instead. Using the appropriate tier of a luck enhancer gives a +1% chance for rarer clue-specific loot, and they'll usually trigger an in-game message in the chat box if such an item is rolled. Free chest rerolls can be obtained from clues, albeit rarely.
Treasure Trails are the primary source for fortunate components given the numerous unique items from Treasure Trails, following the release of Invention, primarily used for the creation of alchemical onyx and alchemical hydrixes. The items can be sold for a hefty price on the Grand Exchange or disassembled for the player's own use.
Treasure Trail rewards also feature a "bad luck mitigation" mechanic.[10] The running tally is unique for each tier of trails, so opening a hard casket without a very rare item increases the chance of getting one from another hard casket but does not affect elite caskets. Additionally, if the casket's Grand Exchange value is below a fixed number specific to each trail difficulty and a random roll for a further roll is successful, an additional roll for a reward (sometimes referred to as a "pity roll") is made after the usual rolls and before the roll for a sealed clue scroll (master). The exact mechanics how this occurs aren't known.
