Knife was lodged in spine... spinal fluid leaking
"Mr Saif Ali Khan was admitted to Lilavati Hospital at 2 am with a reported history of assault by an unknown individual. He sustained severe injuries to the thoracic spinal cord, with a knife lodged in the spine. Emergency surgery was performed to remove the knife and repair the leaking spinal fluid. Additionally, two deep wounds on his left hand and one on his neck were treated by the plastic surgery team. I am happy to confirm that Mr Saif Ali Khan is completely stable now, recovering well, and is out of danger," Dr Nitin Dange, Neurosurgeon at Lilavati Hospital, told news agency PTI about actor Saif Ali Khan's condition.
"A stab wound near the spine can be fatal depending on the severity and location of the injury. The spine contains the spinal cord, which is an essential part of the body responsible for transmitting messages from the brain to the rest of the organs. Damage to the spinal cord can lead to paralysis, numbness, or permanent disability. It also may damage some major blood vessels and nerves around the spine that can lead to nerve damage or fatal bleeding," explained Dr. Akhilesh Yadav, Associate Director- Orthopaedics and Joint Replacement, Max Super Speciality Hospital Vaishali.
Damage to the spinal cord can result in partial or complete paralysis below the injury site. Even minor trauma to the spinal cord or surrounding nerves may cause chronic pain, weakness, or loss of sensation. In severe cases, the injury could impair critical bodily functions, including bladder or bowel control. The risk of infection is high, as deep stab wounds can introduce bacteria into tissues or even the spinal canal. Large blood vessels near the spine, such as the aorta, can also be affected. If punctured, these vessels may cause life-threatening internal bleeding.
