Etymology

[edit]

Calque of German Bierwurst. Compound of öl (beer) +‎ korv (sausage), as it traditionally is intended to be served with beer. First attested in 1932[1].

Noun

[edit]

ölkorv c

  1. Bierwurst; a thin smoked and heavily flavoured sausage (often) eaten as a snack

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Despite the name, it does not contain any beer or other alcoholic beverages (unless such flavour is made specifically). Instead it comes from the practice of serving it together with beer.
