[edit]Equivalent to av- + rätta. Originally from Old Swedish rætta (“execute”), from Old Norse rétta, from Proto-Germanic *rihtijaną. Prefixed by analogy to Middle Low German africhten. Compare Danish afrette, Norwegian avretta, German abrichten.
