After I watched the entire anime series of Eva I was left wanting more, then I saw the manga series. I was impressed, it was the same but different. If you have watched the anime you really should check this out, the way I usualy define it is that its Eva but *more*
More character development
More comedy
More conspiring
More darkness
As with the series the manga follows Shinji though this time we get a clearer look into his personality, background and motivation. The same can be said for all the other characters but perhaps to a lesser extent.
Now if you haven't seen the anime this is still a great read: fantastic art and a deep and complex plot. It should be noted though this isn't really a mecha story at heart. It does have giant robots yes but a large percentage of the series is about the human condidtion. How differant peoiple look at the world and interact with each other. In the first volume you get introduced to most of the major characters and the world they are in (and a pretty cool fight despite my earlier mecha comment).
So if you are new to Eva or not - have a look it is well worth it.

Shinji Ikari, abandoned by his father as a child, is finally called to the techipolis of Tokyo-3. As he is collected by Captain Misato Kasiragi, he witnesses a spar between a vicious creature, and an enourmous monstrocity. He finds that he is to pilot it, and that is where his life changes...forever.
The Evangelion series was a superb view on this story, but the comics really show how it was meant to be done, with the powerful evas potrayed in a much darker setting, and extra scenes thrown in everywhere. In other words: You MUST buy this series.

I must admit I was a bit disappointed with this manga adaptation of the classic NGE anime.

This manga is an adaptation of the Neon Genesis Evangelion and is not as good as the original anime. I was hoping for better. The original Neon Genesis Evangelion is a masterpiece.

The manga follows the original story where Shinji becomes a pilot of the Eva. Shinji is just a regular kid until his dad calls for him to move to Tokyo-03.

If you haven't seen NGE then this may appeal to you. However if you have seen the original anime then don't expect this to be as good..

The artwork is flipped so the manga reads left to right like a comic book rather than a manga.

Overall, for everyone who enjoyed NGE it's worth a read. For everyone else I'd recommend watching the original anime first or even the rebuild movies.

This is a pretty good read. Like someone else mentioned in a review, you don't need any prior knowledge of the anime to read this. (I actually got about 4 volumes in before I saw the anime)

Now, the introduction of the characters, the extra view into each person's thoughts (Shinji: ''third child? What's she talking about'')Are pretty cool, but ultimately, where I feel that the book suffers is in the ability to convey the action scenes, which obviously can't come close to the way they are done in the anime.

However, aside from this, it's a REALLY good read, and it's becoming increasingly obvious as I get further in that the story is definitely different to the anime, and may even end differently.

There are lots of extras from the western translators to make up for the wait for it to come out, and they are pretty good too, such as, in volume 9, a reference to a mark twain story, and analysing how it may have influenced the creation of Kaworu Nagisa, as well as a mythology segment in one of the current mid point volumes that examines the references to religion covered by eva.

Overall, it's a must read for fans, and I must say, don't worry if anyone more experienced in these worlds tell any newcomers to wait before getting into eva, it was one of my first series, and remains my favourite to date. Enjoy! ^_^

This first volume of 'Evangelion' does a fantastic job of easing you into the story.
Introducing most of the main characters in one form or another, you don't need any prior experience of the anime to understand this book. Interestingly, events here happen in a different order than the series, and some things don't happen at all (such as the ghostly image of Rei in the anime). Maybe this is because the manga started before the anime aired?
The extras in this book are excellent, and Viz should be praised for it's translation and indexing all the sound effects at the back of the book (yay!) for easy reference. This stops them having to physically change the sound effects to english, which alters the art.
And Sadamoto's art is amazing. Not hard to see why he's considered one of the best. The pastel colours of the outside cover contrasts so well with black, white and grey screentones of the story.
I'm not going to ruin the story, but if you enjoy sci-fi or stories based on characters, then this book is a good read. Even if you're an Evangelion aficionado, the differences in character and scenario will have you gripped. By the end, you'll definatly want to read the other volumes!
(P.S Did anyone else see Unit 00's arm sticking out of the bulkhead on page 50? - Cool!)

"Yes, there's no mistake... it's an angel!"
"I'd rather have you owe me one" (第三巻)
"Four Torpedoes...dead on! Why won't it SINK!?"
