This lingered on my drives for months. I came in expecting, maybe, stupid jokes around a genderbending main character or something.
Not a single one was found. In fact, what I eventually found was very far from what I expected:
+ An irreverent, absurdist, but very earnest parody of magical girl genre, which is an actual magical girl show itself even while remaining a parody. These people do understand what makes magical girl shows tick. That's why they can laugh at it.
+ Random tangents about animation industry (episode 5, oh god) with occasional use of those tangents as plot relevant mechanics (episode 11, oh god).
+ A much more serious ending than being a parody would warrant.
+ A substantial amount of food for thought on magical girls in general.
This show is a lot cleverer than I expected, and probably, too clever for its own good, seeing how low the rating is.
Verdict: Underappreciated, though probably not for the general audience in the first place.
