A woman died a suspicious death in the forest. Beside her, the sword-smith Amon finds a new-born boy with a tragic fate and takes him in. About 10 years later, this boy who is named Gai and who has become Amon's apprentice, loses his right arm in an accident while making a sword. Amon decides to take a sword called "Shiryuu", which is a sword with demonic powers that has been passed down for generations, and fashion it into an artificial arm for Gai. That was the beginning of it all...

The story of this boy, who has become one with a demonic weapon and is drawn into a cruel fate in which he must face countless battles, can be seen as either the story of "a beautiful weapon and an ugly person" or of "the cruelty of weapons and the beauty of humans". This is a completely new world of comic noir.

* Based on Tanaka Yoshiki's series of science fiction novels by the same name.

It is late into the 36th century in the ancient Christian calendar; mankind, having developed the technology to travel faster than light speed and colonize many planets, has taken a hold of space, to the point of abandoning Earth almost entirely. Two superpowers comprising almost all the human population have now for one and a half centuries waged to a long stalemate a war for interstellar supremacy: the Galactic Empire and the Free Planets Alliance.

When he was young and poor, Count Reinhard von Lohengramm, a military genius born a noble in name only, saw his sister, Countess Annerose von Grunewald, turned into an Imperial concubine; having once helplessly watched her being practically sold to Kaiser Friedrich IV as merchandise, he now seeks to crush the Emperor and free her. Meanwhile, Yang Wenli, an Alliance commander of similar calibre who really wanted to be a historian and not a soldier, wishes only for some peace and quiet; yet, as he unwillingly grows in relevance, he'll see himself duty-bound to protect the Alliance's democracy from the threat of the autocratic Empire. The collision of those two masters of tactics and strategy may bring the war to a close, provided, of course, that they aren't first backstabbed by their respective countries' rotten internal politics...

Years have passed since the violent destruction of Anteiku. The Commission of Counter Ghoul is the only organization fighting the Ghoul menace, and in order to get the upper hand on their targets, the CCG has instituted a new program where operatives are implanted with kakuho, the Ghoul organ of predation. This Quinx procedure has successfully created four young Qs who are being mentored by their predecessor, Sasaki Haise. And while Haise might be the first Quinx, his origins are somewhat mysterious, especially to him. While he knows with certainty that he is Sasaki Haise now, he can't remember the first two decades of his life and strange voices seem to echo in his mind.

To stave off his own inner turmoil, Haise is focused on the difficult task of training his untested charges and meeting the squad goal of surpassing the premier CCG operative, Investigator Arima. And the Quinx Squad not only have to learn to control their Ghoul-like powers, they also have a hell of a lot to prove to the CCG. Many other squads look at the Qs with suspicion or disdain, but Haise and the other Qs are determined to live up to the high expectations placed on them.

But while the Qs struggle to figure themselves out and fit in, the Ghouls of Aogiri Tree are increasing their membership and expanding their influence. Every step the CCG takes towards total Ghoul eradication seems to be blocked by smarter, stronger, better-organized Ghouls. And as the war to save humankind heats up, familiar faces from battles past begin to show up.

A youth team must have a sponsor, otherwise, their club will face disbandment, and are not permitted to partake in matches.

On April 26, 2018, Japan Racing Association's Umabi.jp website launched the Pop Team Epic Kinen campaign, where users can create a customised avatar of either Popuko or Pipimi as a virtual spectator. It also hinted a surprise to be revealed when a number of avatars reaches one million. As the number reached one million in late May 2018, the JRA released a branded webisode on 14 June 2018. Produced by Space Neko Company (which animated Pop Team Story segments and some of short sketches in the TV series), Mikako Komatsu and Ryusei Nakao reprised their role as Popuko in the first and second halves respectively, and so did Sumire Uesaka and Norio Wakamoto as Pipimi. The JRA also held promotional events at Tokyo Racecourse.
