Gio was disgusted, but not surprised, watching the Mets blow another lead to the Braves on Thursday, and the feeling around the 2023 season has gotten so bad, he believes it’s on its way to becoming one of the worst in franchise history, when factoring in expectations against performance.
“This season is unfolding as one of those seasons that make you look back to the moment you became a fan of this team and wondered why you didn’t go in a different direction,” Gio said. “They are authoring one of these seasons that will be a reference points in Mets history that is one of the terrible ones. One of ‘The Worst Teams Money Can Buy,’ the Bobby Bonilla/Jeff Torborg team, this team is right on that path, and you can’t tell me otherwise.”
The Mets hold a record payroll and a record of three games below .500, now 8.5 games back in the NL East. Gio believes that is a more accurate reflection of who they really are, despite some still believing that they will flip the switch at some point.
“This team is bad. Really bad,” Gio said. “You can’t convince me they’re gonna work their way out of this and compete for a championship, even though that is what Steve Cohen is paying for.”
