Eva grew up in the countryside, but came to the city to begin working as a factory girl in the Birling and Co. works. Whilst there she argued for fairer pay, becoming a ring leader among the other girls. And even when she suffered as a result, she displayed a sense of fairness and loyalty to her fellow workers.
This was the first of a series of connections with the Birling family, many of them far from pleasant. Yet Eva’s warm-heartedness remained intact, even as her lack of social connections meant that she began to sink and inexorably get pulled under, into poverty and hardship…
